well it is relativly easy for a pup to pass a cgc , personally the test doesnt show any thing unless they are done around 2 years of age.... it is fine for someone to get a cgc on there pup but they should re-do it after 24 months of age

Thank you for your input. I heard that before and it makes sense. The next step for me and her would be working towards a CD once she passes the cgc and then I will go from there.

Re: How do you train your dog..

Not to hijack this forum but I have a question about training also. I presently clicker train and treat. Jango does really well. Do you ever quit using treats altogether or do you just space out the rewards after say 4 sits, 4 sit and stay and so on. The trainer that I have/had said to get rid of that whole method entirely (same person who said get him a choke collar and to pop the leash every time he did something bad!!!!!!) but every book and all the research I have done says that it is okay.(clicker training that is) I am so confused. I am looking in my area for a group obedience training just as long as it is not huge. I have called my local AKC about this. Oh and as of yesterday Jango is 10 wks old!!!!!!!! When is a good time to look into a prong collar if he needs one.

Re: How do you train your dog..

jango is to young to expect anything out of and too young for obediance ...you teach a young puppy manners not obediance.. for example manners=walking on a leash wherever but not pulling constantly
obediance= heeling or walking in position
manners = laying calmly while on leash for petting
obediance = downs and sits
right now your pup only needs manners let him be a pup and there(as long as they have manners) is plenty of time for obediance later dont bust his spirit he is a baby.. the trainer that told you to put a choke collar on a 10 week old is just a shingle hanger with credentials on it when your pup is old enough for real obediance find a real trainer

Thanks for the info. Is there a rough time frame for Jango to start obedience classes? What age do most rotties start or should start obedience training?

as soon as the pup has all his or her shots, they are ready for class. i got maverick and 15 weeks and started him 2 days after i bought him. your best bet it to get them going as soon as they're old enough and continue as long as you can (some people suggest until they're at least 3). that way you can work with them thru their "adolesent" and "teenage" years. :)

tyeach her manners now teach her her sits and downs at home with food nothing serious...put a lead on him and around your waist and let him go every where around the house with you..... socialize the crap out of him take him everywhere and expose him to everything and play play play everything now should be fun then when he's around 5 months old enroll him in aa group beginers class he will already know his sits and downs and walk nice and he will be happy doing it

Re: How do you train your dog..

I clicker train. I don't agree with phasing out the food entirely. Once you have a behaviour on cue, you don't use the clicker for it anymore, but you do reward it (with play or food or something else your dog likes) occasionally. And there is no reason you can't clicker train for the life of the dog, it's not just for puppies, and many people who clicker train (including some members here) put titles on their dogs. Find a clicker class or a positive-reinforcement class for your puppy - Larry's right about the trainer who told you to put a choke on a pup that young. And don't even think about a prong collar until there's a demonstrated need for it - it's a tool, same as any other (including a choke chain), and should only be used if needed. Either way, your puppy is far too young for anything other than fun, rewarding, positive training.
