What is the purpose of this collar?

I've never seen one before. It's called a "Pull Chain" and made by Herm Sprenger. Is it to encourage the dog to put more pressure on the collar for German style shows etc?

Pull Chain

Re: What is the purpose of this collar?

Looks like it's built to put pressure on the trachea but for what reason?

I would say the opposite. It looks as if it is made so that the dog can pull with his neck. The little u-shaped section would cradle the trachea and the wings off of the u-shaped section would rest on the neck muscles. I don't know what you would want a dog to pull with it's neck back that is what it looks like to me.

Yea, you're right - I must be dyslexic!

Re: What is the purpose of this collar?

It's my understanding they were created to show dogs in. When gaiting the dog, it can pull against the collar but it does not choke them off. My trainer bought one to show her GSD but hasn't used it yet that I'm aware of.

Sandy is correct. Its is a european style show collar. They make them in leather or brass.

Pull Chain
I believe it allows the dog to pull forward for free stacking without choking. If I am not mistaken , it is used in German-style conformation events.

Re: What is the purpose of this collar?

I've seen those before and I thought they would cause less choking than a regular choke chain.

Re: What is the purpose of this collar?

Thanks everyone! I think I might just buy one and try it on Maximus.

They kind of reminded me of a "cribbing collar" that they put on horses to keep them from sucking air. It's a bad horsey habit that can cause colic...
Cribbing collar I think that's what confused me.

Re: What is the purpose of this collar?

I've never seen one used in the Rottweiler ring (USRC), but I know that people who have show GSD's in USA use them all the time.
