What if she doesn't go to school?

There is no puppy or obedience classes where I live. I have some training books on the way, but I also would like some tips from the people that bring their dogs to classes, how should I start training my 11 weeks puppy? thanks in advance!

No training classes

There are videos as well as books. That way you can see the commands and corrections in action BUT I think the best solution is to have a few of us come visit :D

If she doesn't go to school, she will not be able to get a very good job when she is grown and you might have to support her the rest of her life!

Seriously, you need to watch and be aware and when you see someone with a well-trained dog out and about, ask them about training. I'll just bet there is someone who does some training instruction even though you might not think so. Also, have you asked your vet? Ask the vet, does s/he know of someone with a well-trained dog and would he be kind enough to ask them about whether they found training in the area.

Sometimes people just think there is no training available, but haven't really explored all the possibilities. Go ahead with the home study course, but do look further.

Training

Subjectively, I think the Dunbar approach is the best. I'll second Ilovemypup's suggestion to examine his books. When I thought I had exhausted all training resources I was put in touch with a behaviorist who learned from Dunbar and set me and my Rottweiler on the right track (mostly me). I won't say that his method is a panacea for everyone but I think his approach places the Dog/Owner relationship on a solid foudation, more than any method I had experienced previously. Lastly, books are no substitute for practical application but they are a good adjunct to good training. You're gonna have a great Dog!
Regards,
David

Well, I have to forget about the videos, because here they use the french system and I can't see american videos. Dear Judi, actually I found a trainer, he is a local, never been outside the island (don't even ask if he had been in any obedience competition) and when I meet him he had this tiny female dobe with him. Well, after 5 minutes I knew I didn't wanted that man close to my pup. He told me my dog could be completely trained in 6 months, but his own dog was scared to death of him, she did obey his orders, but she was all shaking and looking so miserable! I am sure that he was not using the positive gentle method. He was recomended from my ex-vet, the one that went nuts when I told him that I fed raw and assure me that there is nothing better for my pup that Iams (of course, he sells it). There is only other 2 vets in the island, one already has bad reputation, so next week I am going to check the other Animal Hospital. Soon little Roxy is going to be spayed for her own good. By the way, all the other dog owners that I know here are telling me how stupid I am for spaying the dog, telling me that I can make money, that is bad for the dog, that she will stay small and fat, that is cruelty..... I try to make them understand that is the best but they are just so ignorant is fustrating!!!! I really don't think I will find a good trainer here, like in the states, they just don't care as much for animals :(

Carib, I wouldn't let anyone who claimed to be "a trainer" near my dog if his own dog acted like that. Our instinsts are usually right about these things. You ARE doing the right thing for Roxy by spaying her, just ignore those foolish people! And when Lisa/BuckysMom comes to you to help with training, don't you think Roxy might to learn a little about flyball, too? ;) ;)

Like VHS tapes, DVDs are also country format specific and depending on where you live, US DVDs will not work for everyone. Just an FYI...

Sorry if it was allready posted, I kinda just skimmed. But one big factor of training classes is getting the puppy around other people as well as other dogs. In Julius' class he really didn't interact with his other classmates because our trainer wanted the dogs to stay separated 95% of the time, but it gave him a chance to be around other dogs. I think this would be somthing you should think of doing with your pup, get him around other dogs without interacting, just so she knows its all good if their is other dogs around and not to be alarmed.

:)
