crate training new puppy?

Hi all am a newbie to the list and already love it! My new rottie babygirl is ten wks old and I want to start crate training her.
I was told she can only hold it about 4hrs or so now so should I crate her all night then? if so I guess I need to take her out in the middle of the night huh? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot,
Rita and Shatzie girl:p :p

Crate-training is usually started at the breeder, so it can continue when the pup gets to their new home. But anyway I got so much info from Rottweilers for Dummies. It explains most of the important things you need to know for your puppy. Good Luck!

Hi Rita and welcome to the forum. Her poor little bladder isn't very big yet so I'm afraid for the next week or so, you'll need to get up and take her out for a quick potty break. A couple of hours before bed time you may want to pick up the water so she doesn't tank up just before trying to sleep. About the screams and howls, don't comfort her or offer her any sympathy it'll only make that period last longer. Tell her to hush and explain that it's bed time and we all want to get some sleep. She won't understand what you are saying but your tone of voice will comfort her and will convey to her that everything is all right and time for bed now. Hope this helps, it takes a lot of effort and patients to raise a puppy but it truely is worth every bit of effort you put into it. One other thing, a tired pup is a happy pup so you may want to play with her a little before bed to tire her out so she'll settle down quicker and go to sleep.

Fortunately they grow up fast. I'm a huge fan of crating. In addition to potty breaks in the night, your baby may just want to be with you. She may sleep a bit longer if you put her crate in your bedroom. However, if you crate her in the day, she may prefer to be where the humans are. Good luck.

you need to limit water and walk at appropiate times like after waking and feeding when she wakes take her out play with her walk her when shes tired right back in the crate... my pup is 9 weeks old he sleeps from about 10:30 pm till 5:00am without a peep we do leave the tv on for noise and i cover the crate so its plenty dark... and if he has been out to relive himself already i ignore any whining

we started crate training at about that age- i found that if i pulled the water up around 7 he would be fine through the night (but he did wake up really early). crate training at this age worked well for us but it sure did take some patience.. good luck with your little girl im sure youll be fine

We have crate trained from the begining and are so glad that we stuck with it. Dante now loves his crate, when he is tired he goes right in and right to sleep. When we go out all we have to say is dante, crate and he goes right in. So my advice is stick with it, it will pay off in the end

We started crate training our Rottie when she was 12 wo. Taking up her water early in the evening and taking her out once or twice during the night definitely worked for us. Where is her crate located during the night? Many people find that if you put her crate in the bedroom with you, it calms them. So that may be an option if you are not already doing that.
