House breaking

Diesel has finally learned that he needs to go outside to go to the bathroom!!!:D Sometimes we are upstairs and Diesel takes off downstairs and we wonder, what is he up to....go down and he's standing at the door to go out!!!

Anyone know of a good way to teach him to let us know that he's at the door? A neighbor taught her dog to ring a bell. Diesel makes no noise, just stands there. We watch him carefully, but sometimes we don't see him standing there. He doesn't wimper or paw at the door, which I don't mind at all, but it would be nice to hear something.

Thanks!

I taught Riven to ring a bell to ask to go out, since at my old house I couldn't hear him at the door upstairs all the time. I use large sleigh bells and you can hear them anywhere in the house even with the music up. This time of year, you can probably find a nice door hanger with bells. That's what I have.

Here's a link to an article I wrote on house training, about half way through I dicuss how to teach your dog to ring a set of bells to go out.

Thanks!

Dawn, Thanks for the link. Very informative. I need to go to Target so hopefully I can find some sleigh bells there.

I'm just delighted that he's going to the door! Roxy never has done anything to let us know when she needs out. She doesn't have accidents or anything, but she never tells us, we just take her out regularly!

If Target doesn't have sleigh bells, a craft store should. :)

There's a Michael's right by Target. Thanks for the suggestion. My brain usually doesn't think very crafty!
