Throwing Up

Julius is potty trained at this point with just a few accidents here and there when he’s not feeling well. What I am wondering is when he throws up, should I reprimand him the same as if it were and accident? As of now it has I have not done anything but clean it up because I rarely am right there when it happens. I think I would feel bad if I scolded him cause it probably means he isn’t feeling well in the first place. At the same time, it woudl be nice for him just to go to the back door when he is not feeling well. . . .hehe =-) What do you guys do?

If he is properly potty trained and you have a routine, then yes, if you catch him in the act of pottying in the house, reprimand him and revise potty schedule.

BUT, vomiting can and will happen at the most inopportune times (like 3am...), and most of the time, the dog cannot help it, and you cannot get him out the door before he pukes....so, no reprimand (at least from me).

Ben has a tendency to vomit in corners (usually by the stairs or the door)...no clue why, but if I know he's vomited, I can usually find it :) . If he starts to exhibit signs he's going to vomit, I will either take him into the bathroom or carry a towel and when he stops walking I'll put it down so he'll puke on that....either way, I clean it up, offer a bit of water (must have a horrid taste in his mouth!), and keep an eye on him, depending on what was thrown up. I can never get him out the door fast enough so I don't even try...

If he vomits again, he'll be fasted for 12 hours and we will feed rice and boiled hamburger for 24 hours, just to be on the safe side.

If you see that Julius is going to vomit, you can leas him to the back door, and allow him to do it there (or get him outside quickly), and I think if you keep doing it, he'll hopefully learn that near the back door is the 'puking place' if mom and dad are not home...

I always rushed Chase to the backdoor when I knew she was going to be sick. Now, she goes to the door and asks to be let out. Missy picked it up from her. No, they don't always make it, but they sure try.

If dogs were only like cats. Poof! has only had a few accidents outside of the litter box usually throwing up in the box too!

Brooke - I would never scold a dog for getting sick. You don't have to jump for joy but I certainly wouldn't scold either. If you know he's getting ready to vomit, then move him onto the tiled floor, or out the door. If he's interested in reingesting this, let him! Otherwise get the paper towels and wipe his mouth, then get the soapy bucket of water and clean the floor/carpet, saying nothing about it. The less fuss the better.

Why let him reingest? If the dog vomits could it be not something bad in the food and therefore it is better just to clean it?

That would be my logic also. It's not always better the second time around.

No housetrained dog will (like to) mess up it's area, unless it has no other choise. It will inform you and go to door.

Just last night… scratch, scratch on the bedroom door and whimpering outside the door woke me up. I do know what that means, (since he never scraths the doors or whimpers) Out of the bed in a second to take my dog out and right… he was going to vomit. The same was repeated some hours later… and the last time at 4.30 ::YAWN::

I just clean it up.

The only thing I say to my dogs if they vomit is "Aren't you feeling too good baby?"

Bad enough that they are sick without getting a correction for vomiting as well in my opinion.

I'm sorry to be so late in my response! Busy day today!
Anyway, in answer to your question about my statement...
On the rare occasion that my girl has vomited 'food', (like after eating too fast), she's immediately moved to consume it, and has yet to throw it up again. I've always let her do this. It's another one of those things that we as humans find disgusting (because it is!). But there's got to be some enzyme-rich nutrients in there. Just like dogs eating feces or rotting meat. On the other hand, if she's brought up bile, she won't touch it, most likely because it's bitter.
I really think these carnivorous canines are way smarter then we give them credit for!
Just do what makes you comfortable! Best wishes -
kathy ;)

My sister's rottie (10 years ago), would throw up in her walk in shower.... my sister led her there on a couple of occasions when the hacking started... and she automatically went there every time when she felt ill....

Wish my rotties were that smart...LOL. I get the pleasure of cleaning the area rug, because 1000 sq feet of tile just isn't enough.
