| training I have found some very good advice concerning toilet training my sam (he's about 11 or 12 weeks now) and think it will be quite usefull. So far he is doing pretty good, but still makes a few mistakes. It kind of reminds me of having a newborn baby in the house. I was wondering about the proper age to start obedience training and what to start with. Also, does anyone know of any good obedience classes in the Sherman, Texas area? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks- sam's dad. |

| It's never too early as long as you're using a positive method (like clicker training), and as long as you keep your sessions short and fun, and your expectations reasonable. You may be able to find some useful class information here. Or check the AKC's site for obedience clubs in your area.

| You may want to check into if there is a puppy class in your area. As soon as the pup has all it's shots it can start in a puppy class. They are usually a shorter class geared toward what you and a young puppy needs to learn. You could check the yellow pages for dog training. |

| Akasha was 8 weeks old when she came home and I started her training a couple days later. Her training was kept fun and she got ALOT of treats. I used the treats to lure her into position for almost everything. I didn't do clicker training, I just used treats. Whatever you do make sure you keep it FUN for your puppy. Give lots of praise and reward but do NOT do any corrections until your puppy is older. Remember that your puppy has a very short attention span so keep the sessions short and sweet. Have fun with your puppy. They grow up wayt too fast! I can't believe that our puppies are already a year old;)

| Use these early stages to develop the dogs attitude, desire and drive, in doing this it will be most beneficial in the later stages of training.

| Somebody posted it before in another thread but as long as you keep it fun, any type of training is good. you just don't want to teach the puppy that they don't like training.....:) Ray dad to Sable and Bodhi |
