| How old is too old? Ok, I spent the morning with my mom and my nieces at the dog show and since my youngest niece is 5, I managed to miss most of the rottweiler stuff. So my question is this, how old is too old to train in obedience? Chase knows all of the basics. Sit, down, stay, heel. She fronts when she comes and knows to go around me to the heel position when told. She is slow to respond however. I am sure that is just a matter of practice. I was thinking about getting her ILP, taking a class and maybe getting her CD next summer.

| Sandi - It's JMO but I don't think age should be a factor. If you're motivated to train and Chase is in generally good health and motivated to work for you, then go for it. I have a friend with a 11.5 yr old Rottweiler that's hoping to acquire the UD. This same dog is a regular participant in the Household Obedience class that her owner teaches weekly; showing 'how it's done' to those new to training. She's an incredibly hard worker for her age, but the recent diagnosis of a back problem may curtail her reaching the UD goal. I think it's wonderful to keep the old dogs working. It helps to maintain their dignity and keeps them feeling useful. Best wishes in your decision - kathy |

| I agree, don't let age be a factor. If you want Chase to get her CD then go for it! I think that the old saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is very untrue. Good luck to you and Chase :) Sara

| Novice work is not strenous. It is the same work that the veterans do and physical limitations are the only reason why a dog would not be able to compete in obedience. Go for it. |

| Thanks gang, I think I will. My daughter thinks her ILP name should be Chase the cat. NOT! Carina has been talking about taking a class to brush Cooper up. I think I will talk to her about a trainer. Chase knows just about everything and will do it off lead too, but she could really use the practice and so could I. This should be fun!

| Sandi, I think it's GREAT that you want to work towards a CD with Chase! I think you two will do very well! Maybe you and Carina can take classes together. It is so much fun when you have a friend taking the same class. My daughter and I take the same classes and have alot of fun. Sometimes she gets kinda frustrated because Akasha is more advanced than Keil, but she tends to forget that even though they are the same age Akasha is more mature than her brother. You know how boys are;) :D Keil is somewhat "sensitive" and takes corrections very personally. Akasha just looks at me like WHATEVER My daughter and I have a bet, the person whose dog gets the highest score at the next show wins $50. I tried to get her to do a weeks worth of feeding but she wouldn't go for it:D Good luck! Have fun training! Carol
