How much Maturity do you need for OB.

Obedience practices have been going a lot smoother lately. I was wondering if it was that Chance is getting older or that I've just done it enough times? Also how much of a role does maturity play with Obedience and with any other sport for that matter ?

I'd say with maturity comes "experience" from the dog's side, the ability to focus or concentrate better and clearer understanding of what is required. All this is dependant on correct foundation work though. Maturity definately adds that upper touch to things but more importantly is direction, clear situations, correct motivation and the ability of the dog to drive positively for that which motivates him. These aspect all contribute collectively to a better understanding on the dog's side which in turn makes him work more "correctly".

I agree. While maturity is a factor, it is far from primary and the obedience is actually a result of the trainers skill, dedication and understanding of the individual dog. Since this takes time, the dog is also maturing during the process and that is coincidental.

I think maturity plays a big part in the dog's ability to pay attention in exciting strange environments but maybe it's just my training. I have had several judges ask me how old Sajan is, both AKC and schutzhund, when he goofs off in the ring or on the field. When I tell them, they all say he's still too immature.

Yes, but all the while they are maturing they are getting more training and experience. Or vice versa. As you continue with your training making it more and more natural for the dog, the dog is getting older. A young dog can only have a limited amount of experience simply because of the limited time he's been alive!:)
