| Don't use the command come unless you are in a position to make him come. If he is on a rope so that he has freedom to swim, this means that you can reel his little butt in when you say come.

| He's only 6 months old, keep working with him on lead. Always make coming to you a great thing. If he slows, clap you hands and go backwards to encourage him to come faster. Just keep working with him. |

| I've been having a bit of luck improving recalls by doing a quick recall (on rope) as we reach the creek area, for which the reward is to get to go swimming or etc. that my dog wants to do. Then I don't try to recall again till he has done his pleasurable activity for a while. And I try not to make a recall lead immediately to the end of the activity / time to go home. I had a retriever who was so excited by oceans that she had to always be kept with a physical controller for safety, else not only likely to not recall also likely to head for Hawaii or Australia. In some ways a rope is really a good idea even if the dog has a good recall and there aren't local leash laws. It can help to pull a dog out of a riptide undertow, and make other people, if any, on the beach feel safer. |
