Training Classes

Could anyone recommend a class I could go to in San Diego? I have a 2 month old rott puppy. I have been doing sit with her and she does it all the times. Now I`m working on lay down and walking with the leash. She does not like going outside of the house( on the sidewalk but loves the yard) and if she hears a dog bark she wants to turn around and run back into the house. I usually pick her up and sit her down once the dogs stopped barking. I do this every other day we walk only about 5-6 houses and the other one we walk in the yard on the leash for training. When we come back we do the other training then is playtime. My vet also said I should wait for another month for puppy classes but I figured never to soon to start.. I was also wondereing about dominance exercises.. I was told that you should do every day with the pub. (I`m also getting in the mail the art of raising a puppy which I hope will explain more) Are there any other books you could recommend on training? Also I have not gotten her a training collar which would be the best to get and when since she is only 2 month old. Right now I more or less coax her to do what I wanna do by praising her or giving small treats. Any help or info greatly app. Thanks

Don't know about training places...maybe if there's a local Rottweiler club (or any working dog type club) you can get recommendations.

*Collar: Forget about training collars for now. Treats and praise is EXACTLY right for a little bitty pup! You are doing just fine. Some never actually need training collars.
*Dominance exercises? Like holding her down on her back or something? I'd say just stick with training & teaching her manners for now.
*Books: A must: Rottweilers For Dummies. :) The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Anything by Ian Dunbar or Pat Miller. Online, Dogwise is a good place to buy doggie books.

And welcome! You need to post cute puppy photos now, in ChitChat!

Thanks. I was really wondering and she seems to do fine with the treats and praise.

Yes hold her down. And make it a daily routine once a day. I was not so sure if that would be so good. So I have not started it but I did it once when she snapped at me for taking her away from the cat food.

I got rottweillers for dummies and ob. training for dummies really nice books. I will check out the other once online.

I did not know you could put up pics thanks for all your info. And thanks for your welcome. I`m happy to be here. I hope to learn a lot here. So I will be able to have a well behaved puppy and grown dog. I also hope to do get her CGC sometime in the nearer future. And this seems to be the perfect place to be for info and help and guidance along the way.

Well I am so glad you have such a great attitude towards Rottweiler ownership!

That holding them down/dominance thing is kind of "old school" thinking - I remember being told that too, many years ago. I think it would just frustrate most puppies, or at least it wouldn't achieve much. I think it's fine for transgressions like snapping - most puppies go through pissy stages - but I don't see that it would do much if you were to do it for no particular reason that the dog could understand.

Just being with her, using the same words consistently to accompany actions outside, in the house, truck, treat, sit, come, whatever (it's amazing how big their vocabulary will get in a short time) - all this establishes you as the one who must be trusted and obeyed. :)

Yes - you can post pics in the ChitChat or Picture This forums.

There's also a search button on the upper right where you can search for terms & discussions. :)

If you will go to AKC.org and follow the links, they will have a geographical list of clubs. Look for an obedience club in your area. There will be several.

Thanks I checked it out and will contact them. After doing another search online I found a bunch of other once. Which I will also contact. Does anyone know what the difference is between them do the once on akc.org have been through some inspections to have a certain standart? I will call all of them anyway and see if they have had any rottweiler experience and maybe I can sit in before I deciede to take their class. I also contacted the local club.

The AKC clubs will have KPT through utility as they are trial giving clubs so they train for the community and for AKC competition. They are all-breed clubs which I consider a plus. I want my dog to work around all kinds of breeds and not just its own kind. You will find a wide range of trainers there some with many years of experience with many different dogs.
