I will get a couple of referrals for training for you. Most training is discontinued in the severe summer heat in the Phx area but give me a bit of time to find someone. Later this week.

I was very concerned that a pup had been dumped on someone little prepared or even with the desire to raise it and that always ends up with the dog at the disadvantage - relegated to the back yard after patience is totally lost, usually when the pup is no longer a cute baby. Do keep this dialogue up with your wife, because she is still on her own with this project.

I was really heartened for all of you to read your recent post. It must be very difficult for your wife to be alone in the situation of raising a baby Rottweiler. I bet it will help her greatly to know that you appreciate that it is a lot of work and that you will be very happy and supportive of *both* your wife and Rocky for every little step forward they make together. And cheer her up when they don't have such good days.

Your wife's willingness to get involved in training is great news. That's how they will build a trusting, caring relationship. And I think she will be better able to enjoy Rocky's funny, goofy rottie puppiness once she sees what a positive influence she is having on his/her/your life.

Hoooray!!!

You might want to contact Phoenix Area Rottweiler Rescue (PARR), not to give the puppy up, but to find out who they use for training, vet, etc. They might be able to offer some "commonsense" Rottie advice and answer basic puppy questions.

Also, at least for now, I suggest you tell Jeanette (right name yes?) not let the brothers in law roughhouse with the dog.

Can go back to collar issues etc. as dog is a little older and after the training starts...

Do you and Jeanette have career military wife moms, sisters etc. to give her advice and suggestions on dealing with her role? If yes, ignore following and take their advice over mine. If no, I have a few suggestions that along with dog training and raising should keep her so busy she has little time to be lonely and thus little need of the brothers to come and roughhouse with Rocky.

1) Learn to cook at least 2 different dinners reliably and so as not to be worried if it ever need be done for a tete a tete with a higher ranking officer and family and also so that the problems of overseas added on do not prove insurmountable--need not be elaborate and something back from America will do great, and should be with simple ingredients likely to be findable on the base or locally. And to be able to carry off the cooking and serving of such with both ease and lack of nervousness and panache.

2) enroll in either a modeling class such as at John Robert Powers or an acting class, or both, unless she already has a finishing school in her background or has been a debutante in which case she already knows what she needs to know and then some.

3) study Japanese. Oh, probably she will never be off the base, but you never know. Even a few words can be helpful just in case.
unless of course she is already fluent, in which case she will just have to do lots and lots of training and more training of Rocky boy to keep busy and stave off the loneliness. :D :D :D

First thing though, if Jeanette can access this site and print out, I suggest that she should do that with Mick Trainer's post on housetraining of pups and start following its advice immediately.

I also suggest she get the book by Ian Dunbar called How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks.

Perhaps even if classes have been closed down for the summer there is someone who could help on a private in home basis? I am concerned that given the nature of military base life in general, and particularly during a "code yellow, orange, etc." era that what is done now, or even what Jeanette learns now for future will be last opportunity to learn with a professional trainer until the tour of duty in Japan is over.

And learning to handle a rottweiler is big step from cocker or even other big, but not that big, dogs that Brian will have had. So it may be that Jeanette will need to be in the lead here with learning and be prepared to help Brian come October.

Brian,

I sent you a PM message. To be able to read it use "forum jump" drop down menu to go to "Private Messages". Or use the button at top that says USER CP (on the left) and from there go to "Private Messages".

OK Brian, here you are.

Have Jeanette call Joanne at Sunshine Dog School. They have puppy classes and are kind and reliable people. Classes are held in Tempe, Phoenix (50 St and Indian School) and in Glendale. I know they are starting a session tonight at the Phoenix location. First night it owner without puppy. A session will start in Tempe on 7-11 and I don't know about the Glendale location.

The phone number is 480-968-4955
