A wait boo boo?

We taught Guerin the wait command from the get go, mainly have used it for doors the car etc. Well last night on the walk, hubby had him in sit and asked him to wait, walked a few feet out and said Guerin come! Nothing. Guerin COME, clapped hands, nothing! I said to hubby say ok, he said Ok, Guerin Come, and the dog came running. I have a feeling by teaching him to wait and then when we go out the door we say ok, we have made a serious boo boo. Should we fix this? Is this going to be a problem when he goes in the ring?
Also we saw a jogger coming toward us, so hubby told Guerin to sit and stay, on the path, off to the side a bit, the jogger ran up and by and the boy just sat there!! He turned his head to watch her go by, but did not move, twitch, or even try to stick his nose out for a smell!!

Yes, that could be a problem when it comes to showing in Novice but I'm a little confused here. Did you teach him the stay command or is that wait to him? If he is told to come, that should be the only command you need to say and he should come. If he doesn't then I would work on his recall. You may want to train him to the command Front which would mean come and sit in front of me.

He knows stay and wait. Stay means you stay until I come back beside you,in the heel postion, to be released. Wait is for doors or a go out. When he comes he comes to the front and sits. The problem is when we have him wait at the door we have always gone out first and then said OK, meaning we are out, ok you can come now. So when he was told to wait yesterday he DID, UNTIL hubby said OK! COME. His recall his good, it is just getting him to realize he needs to come, on a wait, by us saying Come rather then Ok come, that is what I am asking is if we need to fix that and if so, what is the best way to undo the OK. He did not think he was released until hubby said OK.

As long as your dog stays/waits and even with distractions, you have done a GOOD job and I really don’t see a problem.

If your dog obeys the command "OK" and you want to change that to “come”, combine both commands to “OK, come” for a while and then change to only use “come” (and eventually lure with a toy or food the first times and of course lot of praise when your dog takes the first step towards you)

I do not introduce the "come" from a stay with beginning dogs or puppies. It is unfair, in that they are trying sooooo hard to be good on the stay/wait which they are just feeling confident they have mastered and it throws them into confusion. I teach the come with having someone restrain them and running away, from them being loose and being called with treats, etc. The come from a stay/wait can be introduced later. I also do not stress the sit in front in the beginning as my goal is to build a fast running and happy come. Work on your fronts with the come-fore on leash. That way you are not getting into front corrections with a dog that is delighted to run to you when called.

Teach in pieces. You can assemble them later. This is a very young pup.

Thanks Judi, so we should not really worry about saying ok? He has got the fast and happy come down to a "t" and he really just naturally comes and sits in front. I think he got that from us bending down arms wide and having him just run right into our embrace. Also early in training with him when we would have him come to us in play or whatever right in to us with a treat, so he just automatically now when ever we call him to us, for whatever reason, comes right in front and sits. We do not worry about position at this point in the game. This boy Judi honestly works happily and is such a natural. We keep any work with him to just one or two SHORT sessions a day. We do nothing complicated and have really just done very basic training with him, because of an earlier thread you schooled us in. He comes from a stay like a dream, on a come command and from the wait with an ok. We do work with a lead. But you had told us earlier to do the hold and run technique for a come and we did and now we just call him and he is there. But I guess what concerned us was he did not think he was released on the wait till we said OK. As soon as we said OK he could not get to hubby fast enough!

Thanks damp, we were pretty happy with the boy for holding the stay and just watching the jogger go by, he got lots of hugs and treats for it!

wait vs. stay

I know there are some different theories here, but here is my thoughts on the stay vs. wait.

To me and my dogs, here are how I use them.

Stay - To my dogs - Stay MEANS stay there until I come back to you. Dont Move.

Wait - To my dogs - Wait MEANS wait there until I call you. Like with the Front and Finish, when you are told to leave I tell him to "wait". walk to my spot, and then call front. This has worked awesome in the showring. I have my first two legs of the CD, Just havent had time to go get the third.

Elmo is still AWESOME with his waits. If I have our front door open to a very busy road, I can tell him to wait and he will never approach the door.

I have good luck with using these two commands this way...any thoughts on this from others?

Good luck!
