Thanks Gretchen, I'll let you know whether I do or don't need the vaccine info resent.

The collar is tri-tronics and came with the booklet and video. Thanks for saying that the video is important, I didn't realize it might offer a lot beyond the booklet. I need to go get a VCR player before I can see the video--I will do that and will study the video a lot before I use anything but the beeper sound part.

His trainer used ecollar with him to stop him from trying to dash into vehicular danger even when in class (which is outside) situation. And so he already learned the drill of that he can turn off the collar by doing the behaviour requested...or not have it go on in the first place by holding to where he belongs and not lunging toward traffic (but I was not manipulating the transmitter). I did get essentially the same unit as the trainer had but for that trainer's is an older model variant, and multidog no beeper, and mine is single dog with beeper. I already know that for this dog the lowest level on this unit is already a high level stim--and that a series of momentary taps is needed rather than holding down the button, even to achieve "continuous". etc. And I know how to check his actual level at start of any session.

For awhile after the in town use of ecollar by the trainer it seemed to spill over to the situation in the country with the log trucks. But now he is back to lunging at trucks. He still does not have the problem any more with traffic in town and esp not at his training sessions, so it is not amenable anymore to having the trainer work with it there.

Before trying ecollar for traffic here near home, I will be trying to use more drive and motivation to keep him focussed in a heel even when trucks come--but he is incredibly driven to respond to the trucks. A long standing habit from before he arrived as my rescue dog, apparently.

I would prefer to channel his drive away from the trucks and toward something beneficial--but something has to be done one way or another before there is a tragedy.

Sounds like you're doing just fine!! :)

As to the lunging at trucks, dogs notoriously don't generalize well, so that a behaviour is decent in the city, but not so good in the country, does not surprise me. You're right, you'll have to work on it in the country. Perhaps offer your trainer a large pizza and some beers to come spend the afternoon walking in the woods looking for logging trucks? :D
