Flat collar to....

I have done all of Parker's training on a flat collar. He's 10 1/2 months old now and has just graduated from Obedience Level 1. We'll be enrolling in Level 2 shortly.

Now that he's almost 100 lbs, I'm thinking that I should graduate to another collar. Although my previous trainer was very impressed with what we've accomplished on a flat collar, there are occasions where I feel that I should have more control. i.e. When Parker sees one of his buddies walking towards us or excited people greet him

A simple choke would probably do. However, I don't like the kind of pressure it can put on the trachea of a dog (years of veterinary work and crushed tracheas have jaded me on them). I know how to use them properly and would like to think that I wouldn't cause such injuries. ;) So it is an option.

A prong is an option too. Although I don't feel that I need that level of 'power' with him (keep in mind he IS on a flat collar right now). Also, while I'm training him in Obedience (can't use a prong), I also have a problem with the perception of people seeing a prong on a big dog. As if I couldn't control him without it, oh he must be mean, blah blah blah

I don't have a problem with him pulling (very rare) and heeling is getting better all the time.

This forum is great for various opinions and ideas - so let them fly! :D

I would suggest that you go to standard slip collars. That is what you are going to use in the ring whether conformation or obedience.

As usual, Judi is right on the money. Nothing beats a standard slip collar for normal training basic obedience.
