Weights around the neck??

I have heard mixed things about this, but many people claim that if you put weights (not extremely heavy) but heavy weights around your dogs neck. (Like a chain with a padlock) They claim that it builds up strength in your dogs and gives them that muscular look in and around their chest. Now I have seen a video where the guy was feeding his dog. He attached a cinder block to his dog's leash and then put the food on the other side of the yard. The dog pulled that entire block to his food. It was actually pretty impressive considering how small the dog was in the video. I know this would not be smart for a young still developing pup, but is this ok for the older dogs? Seeing how some siberian huskies pull much heavier cargo than that.

Huskies pull sled in harnesses, which is fine for them. If you put weight on a dogs collar it is going to damage their trachea.

I hope you're not considering this

Why do you need to build more muscle, they have it naturally? I think the whole cinder block thing is rediculous, JMO. My dog has a large neck and nice head, both were from genetics. Let the dogs grow naturally why do you need them made bigger? Carting and things like that are fine but pulling a block to get their food, ummmmm!

I can see where this makes sense........

I mean, when I want to build muscle in MYSELF, I typically TIE A CAR AROUND MY WAIST AND DRAG IT HALF A MILE!!!!!!

That cinder block "technique" is crap, it's FORCING a hungry dog to possibly INJURE itself if it wants to EAT!!!!

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!!!

Proper diet and excerise will get the dog a lean muscular look!

Sounds to me like you have been visiting a Pitty site and an unsavory one at that.

i have a friend that enters her dog in weight pulling contests.. she started out jogging with it pulling a chain and as the dog strengthened added more chain.. but of course she used the proper competition harness not the collar around the neck... in my opinion if your worried or you want to build some muscle safely just give your dog a nice (nylon with the metal rim band cut out ) pick up truck tire to play with they will chase it and carry it and build all kinds of muscle on there own

Yes

Yes I have heard of those contests. Of course you would use a harness to pull things. I just often see dogs with these huge chains and padlocks on their necks. I live in the Maryland/DC area and I see it very often. I was just wondering if it even helps.

When I go to the gym and do Pull-Ups I always strap extra weight on me.

Well, I live in DC and I've never seen anyone doing this. Perhaps you should find some new places to hang out. Come over to Lincoln Park sometime, there are lots of people exercising their dogs there. :)

Well, just because you don't want to cross the river doesn't mean there aren't better ways to exercise your dog. Bike or jog with your dog, have him chase balls, or just go for lots of long walks. That will build plenty of muscle. Rottweilers are not supposed to have that bulky muscled look like pit bulls.

The only time I've seen dogs [Pitbull or Rottweiler] with those horrible chains around their necks, has been when they were accompanied by guys who're clearly drug dealers or gangbangers or both.

I second the suggestion you hang out in a better environment, don't resort to stupid tricks to bulk up your dog [proper exercise and super-premium kibble works better] and don't get into the whole Pitbull-Rottweiler-drug culture scene. If you've ever seen some of the top ScH dogs, like Jeneck's Wotan, you'd know that chains aren't necessary to create a strongly muscled dog. My bitch has terrific muscles and is lean and fast for her large size. She became that well defined due to constant exercise outside, even in lousy weather. My male is just coming into his bulk up phase, and promises to be quite built for a 27" dog. It takes real exercise, not ridiculous gimmicks dreamt up by the "Rockwilder" crowd.

How sad for those poor dogs. I've never seen anything like this. My Sparkle was emaciated and had virtually no muscle tone when I got her, thanks are probably due to her former owner chaining her up somewhere :(. With good food and fun daily walks, she has really filled out and become muscular and lithe.
