| Help with housebreaking Hi Everyone, This is my first time writing to this board. We just brought home this last weekend, a nine week old female, this is our second Rottie our first girl died last January. My wife and I weren't sure if we wanted another Rottie because of all the work that goes into them:) But when we lost our first girl it left a big hole that needed to be filled. So we found a breeder and fell in love with this pup, who we named Brandi. My question is we ara having some trouble with Housebreaking her. She sleeps through the night without wetting or even needing to go outside. But during the day she will pee any tme. Last evening for instance my wife was gone for two hours and she peedled in the house five times. I took her out when I caught her peedling and left her out for 5 to 10 minutes. She would then come in and 10 to 15 minutes later she would peedled again. Any thoughts on what we should do? I also took up the water bowl after the 3rd peedle. Paul |

| LOL PEA, your name fits your question, huh? :) Check the training forum. The following thread is for you guys: http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...threadid=13884 Crate! Don't just let your pup out - GO OUT WITH HER! Praise her madly every time she pees in the right place. Just leaving her outside is teaching her zero, zilch, nada. Yes. Even if it is 12 degrees and two am - go outside with her. Treat her when she goes, even. Anyhow read Mick's advice, that's pretty much everything you need to know right there. And welcome to these forums.

| Okay, this is going to sound crazy I know, but you might try showing her. Because I live on what was an 18something homestead, we still have an outhouse on the premises. I had a little initial trouble wih my dog, who was also and excitement piddler for awhile. Then, despite snow and rain, I started taking her our several times a day and using the outhouse myself while she went on the ground nearby. With helpful prompts like "okay, let's go out and do our duty now!" She got the idea remarkably fast and became an extraordinarily well housetrained dog. This will, of course, not work if you live in a city environment. It would take at the very least a backyard that the neighbors can't see into. Also, whateve your environment, praise like mad when she does it right. :D Praise till you think the neighbors will think you've gone nuts. You really cant overdo it. "What a good dog, you've done your duty!!!! You are the best dog!!!! Good Good Good" etc. positive reinforcement goes along way. negaive leaves the dog knowing what it did wrong, but not what you want it to do. |
