Back to walking again.....

and it feels so good:D. As many already know Czar was out of commission for over 4 months but now we're back in the swing of things, back to the basics with a pocket full of treats. We walk the development next to me and he's not allowed to have any potty stops, no sniffing and he must watch me and walk like the show dog he is:D. He walks with his head held high and when he attemps to sniff or pull to pee on something he gets a correction, yes I can be a pain, LOL. The first few days we went out last week it was hell , he wanted to do what he wanted, pee on everything, run when I wanted him to walk, pull me over to pushes in peoples yards, and well he just ticked me off big time . At first I told my hubby, no more then I said, wait a minute, if I want something MY way then I will get it, LOL, IOW, he was going to listen to me no matter what, so we did it every other day as before and low and behold he did beautifully today, I am sooo thrilled!!! It only took a week and now he's back to doing what mommy wants and not not what Czar wants :D. We had a great time and we saw all kinds of workers, mowers, all kinds of noises, people in and out and he was an absolute gentleman :D. I praised him upside and down the other, yes on our walks, I sounded like an idiot but you betcha people saw a VERY well behaved rottweiler today and of course I had to do alittle showing off in one of the culdesacs and he was a gem!!! So my point in all this is, repetition, consistency, patience and routine, is the key to get your dog to do ANYTHING you want. I almost gave up but I was determined to have him behave the way I want and as expected and when he's with mom he will walk as I want and when he's with daddy on his evening walks that's when he gets to jog and make some pee stops but there's No reason why he can't learn the difference and be expected to act accordingly :D. Do you think that's asking too much? Czar is sooo smart and loves to work, I know he will learn the difference or will it be confusing? Oh, one more thing, we didn't walk on macadam before bc of his age and stress on his joints, etc. He just turned 2, is it o.k. now? His walk with daddy is in a field where they jog at that time. The morning walks are with me. Thanks for listening:D.

I know from my limited experience that they can learn what each person will allow them to do.

I am so happy to hear he is doing so well:D

Of course he won't be confused. In fact he understands perfectly who he is dealing with. He just wanted to try things out after being fussed over for so long. Can't blame him for giving it a shot.

I walk my dogs on the street because it keeps the noses from diving towards the pissing spots. Yep, even when they're little - it is the time, distance and speed that change with the maturity.

Amen Judi

You're right Judi, Mr. Smartie pants knows exactly what we want and what he wants to do, LOL. I like the street too bc it is a way to teach not to pee on EVERYTHING and at one point he darn near pulled my arm off trying to get to a bush along the edge of someones yard but he didn't do that again, no siree:D. Oh so right you are about being fussed over, won't tell any lies their, LOL, but now back to refreshing his memory who was orginally the boss. I won't give up bc I want the good boy we had before, well most of the time, we'll get him back with alittle work and persistence. Now that he's better he does want to do more, no couch potatoe here:D. Thankyou spoteet and Judi.

Well, I know you're going to let him have fun so I'm not going to worry about his poor little self one bit. I also use the street walking for little pups before they're old enough for "public", but gets them out on lead and the can meet and greet without getting into the real doggy corners. haven't had one break down yet. just use sense on time and distance. I too like to be able to walk informally (not under heel commands) and without constantly giving reminders that the scent posts stimulate. Of course, my neighbor suggested I get a parade permit when I'm out with multiples.:D

Oh and fun he will have:D. He has plenty fun times, Oh gosh, do I sound like I'm a bitch and all I do is drill him LOL, I hope not :o. Cause now that he's allowed to do more he's gonna play with his half brother Phoenix and some of the girls over at our breeders :D. He's quite a ham these days :D.

Judy, I am glad he's better from whatever was ailing him (as you know I've been AWOL for a while.)

I know you laid a good foundation with him, aren't you glad now? :)

Judy C,

I have different commands on walks.
Heel: Means heel, attention and focus.
Walk: Means walk by my side, no sniffing or peeing or pulling
Free: Means sniffing and peeing all you want but no pulling.

On daily walks I mostly use the command walk and free and I allow my dog to be a dog and what follows ( sniff sniff and cocking legs against every lamp post ) and when we train… we train and then the command is heel.

I don’t know how long your walks are, but yes I do think we can demand too much heeling and attention on daily walks but it’s never to much to demand that the dog obeys our (different) commands when out on a walk!

Glad to hear Czar is "on his paws again"!!! :)

Don't want any misunderstanding

damp, so there's no misunderstanding, this walk isn't that long and it's mainly to get him back in the swing of things and behaving as he should through a neighborhood. I guess I made it sound like I was a drill sergeant. I don't make him heel at my side every minute, we do jog a bit and it isn't anything unreasonable, in fact when we come from one development to another we actually run, whew, really out of shape for that, LOL. But no, I guess I made it sound like I'm a bitch and put all these demands on my dog but not so. He's a tough boy and now that he's better he has to be reminded of a few things. Our walk is only a total of 15 minutes and off and on I jog to keep up with his trot, he's not made to be by my side for any length of time. Now in the evenings he goes on a walk with my hubby and that's a fast jog and trot all the way and daddy lets him have fun and do his potty and sniffing stops, gives hubby a rest in between too, LOL. That walk is about 1-2 miles and they're back in 20 minutes depending on how long they go each time. So no need to worry we're not putting too many demands on him and I guess I came across too demanding by what I said but anyone who knows Czar knows he needs a structured life :). Thanks.

Judy
