| Good method for training "heel" ? Anyone have a good method for training heel? Brutus is a bit difficult on this command. He is so powerful that even the training collar does not phase him sometimes when we are on walks. Also, related to walking, how should I train him not to go crazy when another dog walks by? Not only does it look bad that he is lunging like crazy, it just makes me crazy too! Thanks!

| Taking an obedience class is the best method I can think of :) Your training collar (willing to bet you use a prong) is failing more than likely because it's not fitted properly. Taking an Obedience course is a better method because there will be someone there that will be able to help you with YOUR technique......and show you how to get the desired effect from the training collar.

| Yeah, we are currently in CGC. I think I am going to ask for extra help on the heel command with Brutie. As for the collar, I believe I need to take out some links. Is it supposed to fit close to the neck? Right now it is a bit loose.

| I agree with Workingdogz...Definately consult a live (not over internet) trainer to help you with your technique. H owever, I can give you a few pointers... When telling your dog to HEEL, (i'm going to assume on your left side), hold both hands down at the left side of your waist. DO NOT let the dog see your hands correcting him because that will make him want to NOT return to the heel command. INSTEAD, when your dog wanders off, immediately break off at a brisk pace the OPPOSITE direction from where your dog is wandering off. This will make the dog correct himself, and he'll walk/jog with you again. When he IS with you, give him lots of praise, but keep walking while doing so. If you want, you can give him a treat with your left hand while in the heel position. So, ONCE MORE...if the dog gets ahead of you, do a 180 degree turn to the right (so the dog is on the outside of the turn...) If the dog falls behind, speed up. just always break in the direction opposite where your dog is going. And remember, ALWAYS PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE when your dog is back in HEEL position. And, remember to NOT correct by letting him see your hands or arm move...keep that leash bundled at your side and use your speed to correct. -steve |
