Treats for going potty

While half awake/asleep yesterday morning I had this great idea....
See, Chyna is the worlds slowest pooper. She takes FOREVER to find the right spot and finally go. Ive waited as long as 45 minutes (freezing my A** off!!!). She will pee right away, but then wants to snoop around, play, eat grungies off the ground, or make a running bee line for the back stairs
First thing I did is start taking her out on a leash so that she cannot do anything fun until after she goes. Then I let her play for a bit. That stopped working after the first day....
So my bright idea was to start taking a few pieces of her canidae out with us in my pocket. The first time she pee'd I said "GOOD GIRL" a bunch of times, then gave her a piece of kibble. I did that every time she went pee. Then FINALLY she went poopie. I really laid it on with the "good girls" and gave her a treat.
I did this all day yesterday. By the end of the day she would pee, then look up at me, looking for her treat.
Today, she went out and pee'd, got her treat...... then didnt take as long as usual to find "the right spot" and poo. She got another treat, and "GOOD GIRL!!"
Is this just a coincidence, or is she learning that she is going to get a treat for going potty???
Does anyone else do this, or have the same problem?
A few times, I had waited a long time and still no #2 and gave up and came back inside, just to have her then go poo somewhere within 10 minutes of being back inside...

When one of our foster dogs was adopted...Ben coincidentally began to have 'accidents' in the house...or was it a concidence??

Anyways...I began doing the same thing with treats. Ben would see me take the treats out of the cookie jar, and I'd allow him to sniff 'em before we went outside. Once he'd pee, he'd come over, sit in front of me, and I'd give him a small piece, then I'd tell him, "OK, go poops..." and off he'd go, sniffing the yard.

I keep talking to him while we're out there (like to remind him WHY we're there??!!??)...telling him, 'Cmon..let's go...potty, potty" walking around the yard with him.

Of course, once he began pooping, I'd start to praise him and turn to walk back to the house. He'd follow within secinds of 'finishing up' and wait by the door for the rest of the treat.

Once we got back inside, I have him go thru a 'mini obed lesson' for the treat. He's figures out that he's not getting anything in the house unless he's pooped outside. Funy how he knows that...darn smart boy he is!! :D

We use key words

We have never used treats, but that's not to say it won't work or don't work.
With our dog's we use key words, "Go POTTY" once he/she does #1 or #2 they get loads of verbal praise with the Key Word in it. "GOOD POTTY, WHAT A GOOD BOY, GOOD POTTY!" and with all the fuss they usually (in the begining) come over to see what all the fuss is about and get even more praise to include physical praise now that they are near me.
Now it's become a ritual with my youngest one when I get home from work at 5:30 am. I let him out of his kennel, he streaches, I tell him "lets go outside" , we go out the door and into the "Back Yard" (another Key word). Once in the back yard we say hello to each other, pet pet, love love, kisses kisses. "Go Potty" he runs off and pee's, I praise, he come's to see me again, more praise and attention, "Go Potty" he runs off and poops, I praise as he is doing it, when he's done he comes to me for more attention.

Now things like this may not work with your dog, every dog is motivated by different things, some food, some praise, some toy reward. Just find what get's your dog's interst and exploit it! But most of all the dog has to think it just solved world hunger and got a peace prize for it and it has to be fun. By playing with your dog in between pee and poop may make poop come a little faster too.

We did that from the first day and it has worked out fine. Now whenever he does it outside he looks at us and he reallt knows he has done something good. We donīt give candy everytime now because now he knows what makes us happy :) and when we are happy, he is happy ;)
