My first Puppy !!!

Hello everyone, My name is Ray and I have just gotten my first Rotty. I have wanted one for years and I finally have the perfect one. She is 7 weeks old and I was wondering what I could be doing right now to make all the lessons down the road better. She is very responsive and seems to sit and listen to me when I talk to her. What should I do when I tell her something and she keeps doing it. I usually just tap her a little and she stops but goes right back. Thanks for the help, I know this is going to be really fun. By the way, her name is Emily Belle. Take care.

I suggest starting to read thru all the postings in this, the Training forum. You'll learn a great deal.

7 weeks is rather young--where did you get your puppy?

I suggest shortening your dog's name--a 4 syllable name is very long for a young puppy to remember. I myself like 1 or 2 syllable names.

For years this was accepted as the best age to place a puppy in a new home - based on research and opinions of various trainers and researchers. In the past I've placed puppies at 7 weeks, as have many other breeders, with no ill effects. It's only fairly recently that the trend has changed to having puppies spend more time with the dam and littermates - based on the idea that this provides more inter-species socialization and manners.

That aside, the bottom line, as always, is the environment in which the puppy is placed and its basic genetic makeup. No matter what the situation, there is always room for error - inept owners, genetic temperament flaws, etc. A healthy, sound puppy placed in a good home at 7 weeks should work out just fine.

Thanks for the responses. Emily is doing very good, she's learning not to bite me on the face when we're playing, she still does sometimes when she's really excited but never very hard. I have her blocked off in a part of my room, she has alot of room to roam around and nothing she can realy hurt. One side i just have a box and she jumps on it and gets out, but when i see her and tell her emmy down she gets down. She is doing very good about going out to potty. The only poop i sometimes have to clean up is first thing in the morning. That's todays update, lol.

ps. I'm lovin this

One thing we did from the first day was to reward him whenever getting our eyecontact. We said his name and when he reacted we rewarded him. This has turned out to be very useful in all training and also helps in getting a good relation with the puppy

Hi Ray,

Is there anyway you could get her a crate? It would be so much easier for you and it would make housbreaking a little easier too. Also, I wouldn't worry as much about her hurting things as I would worry more about something hurting her. She is so young and so curious that anything she can get into, she will. So please be careful and puppy proof. The crate will give you a piece of mind as well, knowing that she is safe from harm (or harming your things) while she is in there.

Good luck with your puppy:)
