Tap With Nose, Out She Goes!

I read an earlier post about putting a bell on the door knob so the dogs can signal to go out. I ran right out and bought a bell (which are in abundance at any store with Christmas decorations). The first day I had it, each time we would go outside, I would flick it with my finger and say 'outside'. Wouldn't you know, after just a couple of days my Cassie girl (5 1/2 month female) now taps it with her nose to go out (into my new fenced in yard!!!) She just makes me so proud. Not only that, but my 9 year old lab now does the same thing. Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks. But here is the best thing of all. We now have gone two full days with no accidents in the house! I love that bell!

What a great idea. (Especially since I already have bells on many of my doors... as a word of explanation, -- they make a great signal when the grandchildren open a door!)

Sounds like it was just the trick for you, too!

We did that too shortly after we brought our girl home. The rotties are so smart!! Within two days, she had the full grasp of why the bell was there and now, faithfully, she rings the bell everytime she goes out. It is the best idea. Because you cant always see them sitting at the door when they have to go out, but you can hear the bell ring!! I actually think our cat has picked up on it too because every once in a while, we'll see her over there rubbing around the bell and she definately wants to go out. Who knows??

Good idea!! I'm going to try that idea!!!
I will try using bugle horns instead of bells (got such a large house, I wont be able to hear any bells!!).
I'm looking forward to trying out with bugle horns and teaching two of my pups (male 6mths & female 4mths)this new trick!!!!

I also ran out and bought a apple sized christmas bell and hung it from an old lead on a hook by the back door. By the end of the day Morticia, my 5 month old rescue had gotten the idea! It works great except when she wants to go out to play (which is often) it sounds like Santa's sled is coming . At least we are both happy. She can let us know she has to go out and mom doesn't get grumpy cleaning up the floor! Thanks for all the wonderful tips!!
