digging

I have a 6 month old puppy whom I adore but she has a thing about digging holes in the yard. We live on 5 acres and she has the run of the yard but is fenced with an electronic fence system when we are not home. She has taking a liking to digging very large holes in the yard. We have tried the scolding, repeat "no digging" but other than resorting to crating her while we are away, we both work and the kids are at school now, what are the suggestions? I was told to try spreading the areas she likes to dig with Cayan pepper but am worried about it getting into her eyes. Help!!!!!

aha. Well you have my sympathies, I too have a digger deluxe. One thing I found did deter him and his mate was to put their poop in the offending hole. Worked for mine may not for another dog.

Um cayenne pepper.. I also heard tobacco dust, which also gets rid of snails I think it is :-)You going to have to put it all over the place. Does she dig in specific areas only or indiscriminantly?
I did find that mine then found another 'suitable' place to dig and they always do it when the temps are 30C + .... but then I might just have weird dogs.

Maybe she is bored? any chance of getting her a companion dog? Do you have moles?
We found even taking them out for long walks and playing made not one iota of difference to their digging habits.

Thanks for the advice. I think the reason she has been digging in this particular area is because the lid to the septic tank is there and we had it emptied this past summer. I am sure she must be attracted to the smell. we tried covering up the hole with a large board and all she did was dig beside the board. She also has a thing about burying her bones or chew toys.
