Friend trying to retrain pup in housebreaking.

Hello.
The dog that I'm describing with the behavior problem isn't a rott but a toy breed so I'm not sure if this is supose to be here, but I'll try anyway. The lady just bought her toy breed from a breeder and it is seven months old. The breeder taught it to go to the bathroom on the kitichen floor and the new owner is fed up with seeing droppings on her kitchen floor so wishes to know how to retrain the dog to go outside. I was hoping someone here might have some ideas that I can pass on to her.

Suggest that your friend get a crate. When she can't watch the dog, Fido is crated. When Fido is out of the crate, she watches Fido like a hawk. She takes Fido out to the latrine spot periodically & makes a huge fuss when Fido uses it.

Housetraining is housetraining, regardless of the breed, regardless of the age.

Be aware also, that there are some toy breeds that don't seem to housebreak. They don't mind at all going in their crates and lying in it. These are often raised on wire (especially the coated breeds). I would go the crate route, but caution that with some of these breeds, it might not be the solution.

I actually took the first pile of poop...that ended up on my daughter's rug outside to the designated potty spot in the yard. The next time I took Jake outside to see if he had to go, he found that pile...sniffed it furiously...and has eliminated there ever since In the beginning, watching them like a hawk is the key, and if you can't...put them in the crate.

Thank you for your suggestions. The reason I wasn't sure if it was supose to go into the behavior board or not, was because it wasn't rottweiler related. I'll pass on your suggestions to her.
