Ditto on the getting slowly accustomed to the Gentle leader. For 1 week I put it on and off, using treats and then doing a few "sits" and "downs" w/ treats before I ever attached the leash.

I had a similar problem with the collar not fitting properly. We found that a smaller size made all the difference. Also, Gypsy would lie on the ground when she pawed to remove the collar. Everytime she went down I'd get her back up.

Now the new smaller collar fits perfectly albeit VERY snugly.

Diane's help was invaluable.

No, his muzzle isn't particularly short. If anything it's on the long side (I suspect he's a mix but as he was picked up as a stray by the HS we don't know for sure). I know it's on correctly because it's on the way the frontierrotts post talks about, as well as the instructional pamphlet that came in the box with it.

I put it on him for a little while last night and he didn't get it off. It is awfully snug though...he can just barely get his tongue out to pant. I'm hoping that once he's used to it (I'm optimistic ) that I'll be able to loosen the nose strap a little bit. He practically does somersaults trying to pull it off with his front paws. When he does I correct him and get him up again. Lots of praise and goodies for tolerating it too! He does walk like a dream with it!

If he can barely open his mouth, then its too tight. Is the part that goes around the neck right behind the ears? If not, this would make it easy for him to get off the nose piece. I am sure its very uncomfortable with the nose piece that tight.

Yes, it's right up behind his ears and snug enough to barely get one finger under the neck strap, as directed.

I just bought the GL for Sam this weekend. I can't rave enough about it. Sam pulled like a frieght train even with the pinch collar for the first half of our walk. I would have to constantly correct him and get dragged along. I put the GL on him in the house and boy he didn't like it. He pawed, tossed his head and leaped all over the place. Once he got used to it being on him, I tried walking him with it. He didn't like that either, he could not pull me with it on. Then we walked by some mouthy little yip-yip dog in a yard and Sam tried to yank me over there and he couldn't do that. Man, he got frustated with the fact he couldn't get me to do what he wanted. He has a tendency to jump on people too when he gets excited. I think the GL can help me with that too. Oh I love the GL and I would tell anyone to get a hold of one!!

Ditto, and--

I saw them at Petsmart this weekend. They were $6 more expensive there than the one I got from my trainer.

I got my Gentle Leader through our trainer. I saw the ad PetSmart ran yesterday for "Gentle Lead", and they didn't even have it on the sketched dog correctly. The neck strap was low on the neck, nearly touching the dog's collar.

Spike is getting better with his, though he doesn't like his lack of control either. I've been able to loosen the nose strap a little so he can now open his mouth as he should be able to.

They are great tools!

I take Dakota to PetSmart for obedience training and I will say that I am impressed with the trainer. Last week was the heel command and Dakota did really well. This week was the heel command but putting down your right foot with them automatically sitting. The trainer saw how excited Dakota gets being around other dogs and suggested using the Gentle Leader to see how it works. She put it on Dakota with step by step instructions on how it should fit and how to use it. My little guy did great using the Gentle Leader. He was not excited around other dogs and was sitting on the right foot command every time. Even after I took the Gentle Leader off of him when it was time to go, he was not getting excited around other dogs and sat on the foot command. I am going out this weekend to purchase one but PetSmart wants $25.00 for them. Does anyone know of another place that is cheaper to get one? If I have to pay $25 for something that is going to work for the both of us then I will.

Can GL be used on puppies? I was reading this post & it sounds good. Axel is almost 4 months old, is he old enough to use it?
Thanks,
Teena

I wish I had used the Gentle Leader when Gypsy was younger. Start them younger rather than older.

I got mine from my trainer for $18.95, $6 cheaper than Petsmart. If you're using them for training I guess you're stuck--unless maybe your vet has them.

So how young is too young then? Titus is four months old! He doesn't pull yet but it would be nice to be proactive with the whole problem!?!?

If he doesn't pull he doesn't need it. Gypsy always pulled. Some dogs (lucky duck owners!) never pull--like my sister's Rhodi.

If your pup does fine with a regualr collar, GREAT and keep up the good work.

The Gentle Leader can be used on puppies as early as 8 to 10 weeks old.
