It's never too late OR too early!

I disagree. Of course, there are many opinions on this, but I believe it's too early. At this age, the dog doesn't have a good attention span and training will not be effective. I think 6 mths is a perfect time to start training. However, it's never too early or too late to establish ground rules in the house, which I don't consider really as training. I would start that right away. And also, you can teach a pup a few things too, like sit or down, whatever else, but I would wait with formal obedience training. Interaction with other dogs and people is also greatly incouraged at this time.

NOW.
sit, wait, leave it, basic commands you can start at a very early age. Make it fun and enjoyable.

Speedy wasn't asking about formal obedience, just basic, which would be the sit, down, etc., That's why I said "Now!" :D

I agree, that 3 months is too young for formal obedience training. They are not mature enough and do not have the attention span or self-confidence yet...

My dog's formal obedience started out with 'Basic obedience' that's why I thought we were talking about formal obedience.

I started my girl at 4 months and in class they told us that we would not work on one thing for a long period of time as they will get bored:)

So I would say start now, the socialization is great too.
