command to settle -- what to expect

What do you expect of your rottie when you give the command 'settle' (or related word)?

I am teaching 'relax', but am not sure what I should expect -- go to their 'spots' and stay there until released? go anywhere in a down stay until released? Or just go away and stop being annoying :p ??

One of them sits on his spot and looks at me as if to say, is this what you want? He seems a bit confused, probably because I am not sure how to best frame the command.

Thank you

Well, if you're not clear what you want them to do, they won't be either.

I use relax in training. Settle in the house.

If I'm in the middle of training and I need to stop, I have to turn the dog off and I do it by telling them "relax." This is a down, rolled on a hip. They are free to look around, sniff, lick themselves. I expect nothing from them except to stay down. When I'm ready to resume, I pick them up and turn them back on.
Platz is a trial, sphinx position and they drop fast and remain in drive.

Settle in the house, means stop the horseplay, buzzing the rooms. Go lay down means go away from me and lay down - chill out. Or I crate em. :D
