training for obedience and conformation showing My pup is 16 weeks old. I've been working with her on sit, down, walking with a leash, etc. I have her signed up for a USRC sanctioned show later on this month and am having some problems baiting her. She sits whenever she wants anything (she does this herself). When I try to bait her to stack, she sits. This is great in the house, but how do I teach her to stack at a show and let her continue sitting in the house? I hope some of you who train for both obedience and showing can help me out here. Thank you in advance!

Its all in the way you hold the bait. When I want my shepherd to sit, I hold it upwards until she moves her head up and the rump goes down. But when I want her to stand (we're show training so we can do Juniors) I point the bait down, and when she's standing still eating the bait, I place the legs. If she sits, lead her back into a stand by holding the bait down but facing away from her. So she can sniff it threw your hand but if she sits, she can't smell it anymore. You can also hold her right hip joint with your hand flatly holding against the inside of her hip. It prevents sitting and is used in Obedience to teach a dog to stand. You can also just lead around alittle and walk her into a free stack, then get down and place the legs before she knows whats happening. ------------------ - Dana - "All Rottweilers were created equal"

Thanks, Dana. Could you be a bit more descriptive on holding the right hip joint? I can't seem to picture that. Thanks!

hmm, hard to explain. Its just inside the right hip up where the hip connects to the body. I think the technical name is the flank but I'm not sure. Anyways, just put your hand flat and with your palm facing out, just press up against this joint-area. A dog has to move this jointed area to sit down and if you apply alittle pressure, the dog is unable to sit. My first Obedience Instructor showed me how to do it. ------------------ - Dana - "All Rottweilers were created equal"

Teach the dog to stand. Then the stand stay.
