Gentle Leader collars What does anyone think about the Gentle Leader collar? I'd like any opinions or info. I've already checked the website, but I'd like to hear from people who have used them. Thanks for your help.

They work great. The only drawbacks for me was that everyone thought it was a muzzle and I had no way to correct her. I opted for the prong collar. The gentle leader will stop pulling immediatley. mike

I love them. I have a "difficult" female and I love working with this harness. Yes it does look like a muzzle, but I just explain to people that it is not. They actually have a pin you can wear that says ITS NOT A MUZZLE! To make a long story short, it makes training the dog a lot easier.

mojo, I love the gentle leader. It is not the easiest to start using for some dogs, but it sure does not take, long to see restults. At one time I had a very large, dominant female, and when I used any other collar all she had to do was pull head down and drag me wherever she wanted to go! When I started with the Gentle Leader, the problem was imediatly corrected and it made training a lot more fun for both of us. I was not frustrated at all. I hope you enjoy it. Lisa E.

i'm also a gentle leader fan. it can turn a chronic puller into a dream dog! if you use it, don't forget that some dogs needs to be desensitized to having this put on thier head. some dogs freak, so if your dog does, take it slowly and introduce it with lots of praise and treats.

I use the gentle leader head halter on my rotts too and it works great. It is so much easier to walk them without all of the pulling and they get used to it pretty fast. Initially though they tend to pull backwards, paw at it, and try to rub it off their muzzle with desperate paws. I have used prong collars, choke chains, and harnesses made to halt pulling but nothing has worked as well as the gentle leader for our dogs. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif

I just began with a Halti this week with an 84 pound male. He would walk and heel with a choke collar most of the time, but when he pulled, he could give me a good jerk and himself a wheeze and cough. He thought I was trying to do something awful at first, and either played rock or tried to rub it off. After 4 days, he seldom pulls and not very hard when he does. I did not trust it not to come off, so I clipped the lead to his regular collar and ran the handle through the Halti clip ring. Yes, everyone we see thinks it is a muzzle. I would love to find one of those buttons!

The Gentle Leader works great for us, no negative mental or emotional issues with my pup. In fact, Kali's confidence is better since I started using it for walks, because we turned a dreaded, frustrating activity into a fun one where she gets praised often. I do short training sessions at home without the G Leader and will extend those to public walks when I feel she is ready. I was a little worried that people would think it was a muzzle at first, but realized that a Rottweiler who is pulling her owner around is probably just as (if not more)intimidating as one who appears to be wearing a muzzle. I think each person and dog are a little different, it depends on what works best for you and the dog. Whatever it is you should feel comfortable and confident in using it and be sure that you know the correct way to use it. I see too many people walking dogs with choke chains and prong collars who have no clue, their dogs are pulling them around, struggling to breathe and not learning how to walk on a leash.

Gentle leaders operate the exact same way as a horse halter and yes have the same dangers. IF you let your dog have more then 6' of leash and let him hit the end he may indeed break his neck. Same with a horse- that's why they always tell you if you will be tying a horse out to graze use a collar or a leg leash or hobbles. Gentle leaders work very well for most people and most dogs, some do need gradual conditioning to wear them just as baby horses sometimes do. Chakamac do you have to be so negative and confrontational? Gosh! Choke collars and pinch collars are dangerous too if not used properly! WHATEVER works for the individual owner and dog are what should be used. The average pet owner wants to take their dog for a walk NOT train it every second they have it on a leash. I personally don't use a pinch collar but used properly I have no real issue with it. I have 2 dogs I myself use a halter on when my step daughter wants to walk a dog. I myself have no problem training while walking but most people just want a relaxing walk Chakamac please chill out and stop being so condescending. Who cares what people use as long as the dog is getting walked and socialised safely and not stuck home?? And everyone else just get good instruction on how to PROPERLY use and fit your walking equipment and then walk your dogs! ------------------ Diane Frontier Rottweilers & Shiba Inu and Volunteer with NorthEast Rottweiler Rescue & Referral http://www.rottrescue.org

Sorry if you think l'm condescending. And l'm sorry that your right and l'm wrong. But all l stated was fact. Gentle Leaders come with a warning statment in the packet and that's good. Chokers and Prong collers don't. They to should have a warning statment attached to. Hey may be puppies should have one attached to them warning them of the weired dog world Lol. And the site that l refered to was for people to go too so as they could get infomation so as they could come to an informed opion. And for that I'm sorry.
