When I met my husband; he had 3 dogs, I had 3 dogs. HIS dogs were allowed on the bed, had their "own" couch, (which also included the *people* couch) occasionally destroyed things when he wasn't home etc. My dogs; sleep on the floor, lay on the floor, the pup is in the crate when I'm not there to watch her and I can't remember the last time one of the adult dogs messed with something that wasn't theirs. Now....when we got married....there needed to be "adjustments" made in the guidelines. NO dogs on the bed or furniture. Period. I live with dog hair at work and at home...I think I'm entitled to not SLEEP with dog hair OR their slobber on my pillow. HIS dogs now abide by the rules. Took some time (and a scat mat for the couches) but they are not on prozac, in therapy or resentful. Pretty well adjusted dogs. Can be done with little or no "suffering" on part of the K9

Rottmommie, Yep, I had to recrate mine after they got used to sleeping in my bed... I know it's going to take a lot of time to break them to sleep in the house, but not my bed - so far none of us has the patience, they get in bed, they win.... They usually get to sleep in the bed for about 4 or 5 days, then it's back to their kennels... I figure it's also good training, to know that they can do something for a while and still go back to their crates without causing a ruckus - what happens when they are used to sleeping in the house and I go on vacation and they have to be kenneled while at my moms, then they throw a fit??? Actually most boyfriends wish they had such a good life as my dogs... Good Luck! Kathy

Gypsy used to sleep in bed with me and I actually went out and bought a bigger bed so she could have some room. After putting up with her always sleeping on my legs at the end of the bed, enough was enough. I started putting up a baby gate to the bed room so she couldn't get in there. She would stand there and cry for an hour or two until she realized that she wasn't coming in anymore. Then I bought a waterbed and figured she wouldn't go up there, so I took the gate down. The day after I set up my waterbed I was downstairs, not even wondering where Gypsy was. I went upstairs and guess who was on the waterbed. She must have been sick from being on it because she wouldn't move, her eyes were watering and she was drolling really bad. I went over to the bed and pushed on it and boy did she get sick. Now, she won't even think about getting on that bed, she sleeps on the floor in the bedroom. In my opinion I would suggest putting up a baby gate to the bedroom or getting a waterbed ![]() [This message has been edited by 2RottieMom (edited August 26, 2000).]
