Blind Senior Rottie Dumped at Shelter Needs Help ASAP - NJ

I received this from a volunteer at the shelter. He is at AHS Shelter in Newark. I can help with pull and transport if anyone can help.

Mary

From Leslie:

This poor dog breaks my heart. Spanky is an 8 year old blind rottie who was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. In his kennel he is very well behaved and takes treats from you gently. Spanky seems very healthy for his age and is energetic when taken out of his kennel. He did pull a bit on the leash but I think its because he can't see and wants to check everything out with his nose. Is anyone willing to give this guy a second chance at a permanent, loving home?

Thanks for finding his info, Lisa. He's beautiful. You can only hope the owner had some kind of family emergency. Otherwise....bad thoughts....

He's beautiful...what a heartbreaker. I have to agree with FBM about the "bad thoughts" Please keep us up to date Mary.

Question: Do we know if Spanky has been blind all his life?
Question: Petfinder stats says Spanky is a girl...all descriptions to the contrary?

I dearly hope somebody can help him out! If somebody in Ontario or Quebec has a home for 'him' I can transport from Upstate NY if needed this weekend.

Even though Petfinder on opening page says female - Spanky is a male.

Oh that just makes me sick! People are just so callous! I wish there were something I could do from here. He would fit right in with our retirement home.

Hold that thought. Some of my rescue contacts are Canadian and I might have a bite.

This just breaks my heart!!! It reminds me so much of the Rothe/Syd story!!!

I just wish I could take ALL OF THEM!!! If I could get some people that were willing to foster, I could do so much more!!! If there is anything I can do, as far as transport/pulling etc. please let me know.

I will post this to my closed lists also, maybe, just maybe someone is not FULL!!!

Re: Blind Senior Rottie Dumped at Shelter Needs Help ASAP - NJ

After losing Adolph, I have been looking for a rescue that I could offer a better life. I saw Sparky this morning and decided that I am in a position to help him. I called the shelter a few minutes ago and was told he is still available. Actually, they said people have called for him but no one has committed to taking him home. In addition to that I was told that they have 17 Rotties there which saddened me further. I just faxed my application over to the Newark Humane Society. Once I hear from them, I would be willing to go pick him up. I do not have any experience with a blind dog, but I would imagine that with love and attention he will respond exactly the same. I will keep you all updated.

I am NOT supposed to cry at work - thank you thank you thank you for caring. We have a member here with "Frankie" who is blind - I will find her info and pass it along to you.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed that this works out well for both of you.
