My hero

This was the write up about my boy...

A ROTTWEILER has made a friend for life after leaping into action to save an elderly blind spaniel which had fallen into a ditch.

Ten stone Mason was being walked by his owner Mandy Davies of Pensby when he picked up the scent of the dog which was lying motionless at the bottom of an embankment.

Mason started barking to alert Mandy who then scrambled down the embankment to rescue him.

Mandy, 35, said: “Normally I don’t let Mason off the lead if people are around as because of his size they are very wary of him.

“We were walking at the fields in Irby when he started behaving oddly, usually he’s very lazy and stays close but he suddenly became very alert and started barking.

“He ran to a ditch and got very excited, circling around and looking closely.

“At the bottom there was an elderly springer spaniel who looked in a very bad way.

“I tried to help but it was far too slippy, so I held on to Mason’s lead while I went down and got hold of the dog. I kept tight hold and told him to go back which is a command he also responds to.

“At ten stone he needs to go on a diet, but he was able to use his strength to pull me out, he definitely saved that poor little dog, it was very cold and he wouldn’t have lived much longer.

“When we were out Mason was absolutely fantastic, nudging him with his nose and trying to get him to move.”

Mandy hopes her pet’s actions will make people think again about the much-maligned breed.

It is not clear how the spaniel, now named Digby, came to be in the ditch.

It has now been transferred to a rescue centre in Warrington and is doing well after attention from a vet and a good feed.

Mandy added: “It’s funny because Mason usually stays well away from other dogs but I took him for a visit and he’s getting on well with Digby.”

Unfortunately I would not be able to keep him even though he is gorgeous, I work full time, and it would be unfair on Digby, as he is 14/15 yrs old, blind, deaf..

Hopefully the story may help Digby to find his forever home.
