Dog Returned To Owner

POSTED: 5:12 pm EST November 19, 2007
UPDATED: 7:44 am EST November 20, 2007

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. -- A Rottweiler loose in a Central Florida neighborhood was shot with a Taser gun by a sheriff's deputy on Monday but kept running, forcing officials to lock down two nearby schools.

The dog and a pregnant female Rottweiler escaped from the back yard of a Rockledge home near City Hall and Bear Hugs day care, cornering a resident returning home.

"I was standing out here in my driveway getting out of the car with my friends," Debby Brown said. "The dog is about 90 pounds -- solid muscle."

Police were called to the neighborhood and a deputy shocked the animal with 50,000 volts of electricity by shooting it in the neck with a Taser gun as the dog ran passed him. After being struck, the Rottweiler continued to run around a house.

The dog was later caught by its owner, who would not talk to Local 6 News about the incident.

The female was captured by Animal Control officers, but both dogs were returned to their owner, who was cited in the incident.
"Animal Control has been out here a gazillion times and won't do anything about (the dogs). The dogs need to be taken away from these people (and) put down," Brown said.

No one was injured in the incident.

It is not known if the dogs' owner has been previously cited.

Only because it was Rottweilers. Had it been another breed (except Pit Bull)
no one would have read about something like this.

I'm sitting here watching the tv news and that video was about to be shown- I had to change the channel. Just from the glimpse I saw of the preview made me feel sick to my stomach.

Its totally nuts, because its a rottweiler they made a big fuss.

When i walk my dog people jump to the otherside of the road but they can walk straight thru a pack of stray unvaccinated dogs. I dont understand why people react like this. Somebody please explain this way of thinking to me.

Why couldn't the Owner of these two wonderful dogs keep controle of them? The cops (as bad as it is) did what they had to do, at least they didn't get shot and killed. The owner in my opinion should of had them contained better than she did. Thank GOD no one was hurt.

Wondering what makes Debby Brown state they need to be put down! Oh yeah, it was only because the dog is a Rottweiler. Crime the dog commited- being solid, muscular (as should be) and getting loose. Debby Brown feels she should be put to death for these acts?!!! Unbelievable!

it happens... I have a lock on all my gates, but the first and last time my dog was ever in my back yard unsupervised, he somehow got out of the yard. In a panic, I run out front imagining my dog getting hit by a car or something to find him at the school bus stop with all the neighborhood kids petting him. Luckily he likes kids. He'll never go out of my sight again. That could have been my dog that day.

Wow... I just saw the clip...
The dog did not even show any signs of agression. Yes, I agree the owner needs to keep her dogs under supervision and should have been fined... but for a school and a daycare to close down is just plain nuts!!
I love the redneck lady complaining... looks like she was holding a pint of beer...

I thought the same thing.

I love how the media always has to include the opinion of anyone on the street. Of course, the cameras weren't there when she was "confronted" by the big, muscular dog.

For some reason, it really bugs me the way newscasters say "Rottweiler". There is a hint of disdain in their voice that irks my nerves something fierce. Anything for a story.

i'm kinda glad they're shown that way in the media though. it shows what kind of dog your average idiot will end up with if they do get a rottweiler. I've come to realize that rottweilers are a true enthusiast's dog. you cant just treat them like your average untrained unsocialized golden retriever and end up with something you can live with. as long as ignorant people are scarred of them, those same ignorant people wont get them, and all is right in the world... for the most part...

I see your point; however that ignorance also leads to BSL. That is the problem.

Re: Roaming Rottweiler Shot With Taser Gun Prompts School Lockdowns

I see it all the time. I'll take my two rotties for a walk on the canal in Williamsport, and just about everyone that walks past us will make it a point to walk way away from us, like my girls are going to attack them, and all my girls are doing is wagging their tails. There was one time when I took both of them to Petco, there was a women with a small dog walking around, and as soon as she saw my girls she picked up her little dog and walked in a different direction. What she didn't know is that we have a little dog also that is the boss of the rotties and they all play together great.

I was wondering the same thing. From reading the article, nothing was mentioned about the dogs showing aggression, just got loose and started running around. That in itself doesn't warrant for a dog having to be put down. I never leave my dog outside unattended, and I'm glad that I have a great bunch of neighbours. Even if some are a little afraid and intimidated by my dog, they at least take the time to get to know her.

Snip, snip.

Emphasis mine.

All that means is that someone kept complaining without a good reason. Otherwise, I'm quite sure, AC would have taken action.
