Dog Rescued After Being Locked In Stifling Car For Hours
Tuesday July 31, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff

It's the kind of stupid and senseless action that has no excuse. Toronto Humane Society officials were forced to break in a car window Tuesday afternoon to rescue a dog left sweltering in an oven-like car. Investigators were called to a parking lot in the King and Jameson area around 2pm where they were confronted with the four-legged friend in an obviously dangerous condition. It's believed he'd been sealed in a locked up car with no windows open for several hours. The temperature inside the vehicle had reached in excess of 70C.

Cruelty investigator Tre Smith was sure the dog was near death and didn't have time to wait for the owners to return. So without hesitating, he broke open the window to reach the limp animal. "I could see through this window and there's a large breed Rottweiler, about 110 pounds, slumped over the back seat with his legs up and a blank stare forward, death stare we call it, foaming from the mouth and he was non-responsive. So I immediately smashed the window and opened the car doors and dragged the dog out and brought it onto the pavement."

Bystanders came by with buckets of cold water and poured them on the dog, hoping to revive him. Andrew McGowan was one of them. "He was laying right here, and we were pouring water on it slowly, making sure it was still stimulated," he remembers.

Veterinarians tended to the dog, which was unresponsive as he was rushed to THS headquarters on River St. and given oxygen and IV on arrival. Officials say it's too soon to know if the animal suffered brain damage and they'll be watching him carefully for at least the next week. But so far, the signs are better than they'd dared to hope.

But this sad story doesn't end there. When the owner finally emerged after hearing his car alarm go off, Smith managed to handcuff him to the vehicle while police were called. The accused, who will likely be charged with cruelty to animals, also apparently suffered for his alleged actions.

It appears an enraged witness may have attacked him as he was stuck shackled to his car and he was bleeding when officers arrived to take him away. Smith insists he had no choice but to leave the suspect where he was. "The police hadn't got here just yet but they were almost here, and I had to leave because the dog was non-responsive, had stopped breathing and I had to stimulate the dog just to bring him back. So I had to leave for the life of the dog."

Charges against the person who inflicted the beating may be pending.

Humane Society officials say it's a perfect reminder that if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. And dogs, cats or any pet should never be left in a car during the summer heat, even for a few minutes. "This happens all the time," Smith complains. "There's ten or fifteen calls a day of people leaving animals in cars. So do us all a favour and your animal and yourself. Leave your animals at home."

Note: Some of the video in this story may be disturbing to sensitive viewers. Discretion is advised.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

My mom called me so upset seeing this on the news today.

I don't understand people. With temperatures reaching mid 30's (100F) how in the world could you make a bad judgement call? Its scorchering weather these past few days.

Sad thing is I'm sure this man will charge the person attacking him, who will get it worse from the law, than for what he did to his dog.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

Either last summer, or the one before, a woman left her bird in the car while she went in to see a movie. The bird, of course, died and she got a slap on the wrist from the courts. She supposedly tried to come on the local message board defending herself, but no one agreed with her.

Whether it's an animal or kids, common sense seems to be in short supply with some people.

Thumbs down Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

I heard on the news that the owner of the dog came running out after his car alarm went off when they had to smash the window open to get the dog out.
The owner was abusive to the cruelty investigator, and then tried to snatch his dog away from him. The investigator took his handcuffs and handcuffed the owner to the car handle in the baking sun. I thought that was a good idea...see how it feels.

I also heard on the news,,,,that no one is talking and not one witness will come forward about anyone hurting this guy. No one saw a thing.
The abuser cannot press any charges.

The dog is still critical.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

They say the owner will be charged with animal cruely and a possible 6 month sentence in prison (will see if that happens...)
I just pray that they do not turn the dog back over to the jerk that almost took the dogs life, but most likely they will.
The laws in Canada just do not seem to be severe enough when it comes to animal cruelty/neglect.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

one other news story said the police shut the guy in a black SUV with the windows up/not running "for a time" while they "investigated" the incident. LOL GOOD FOR THEM!

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

Oh how so very sad for this poor boy.
My eyes have tears. How can anyone be so stupid and cruel.
So many of us have lost their heart dogs and would have done anything to be able to keep them and then this idiot deliberately leaves his Rottie locked in his car to die!!!
I hope they kept the moran handcuffed to his car a good long time - then it wouldn't be long enough!
There is a higher power that will deal with him later on...

I COMPLETLEY AGREE!

I don't know how anyone can be so thoughtless and mean. I can't believe it that there's anyone that is that cruel in this world. There should be a much bigger sentence and fine for animal cruelty. 6 months is nothing especially when you think if they can do that to a dog, imagine what they could do to a human. It discust me that there are people like that in the world.

I hope this owner meets loads of dog lovers in prison. Six months with them should teach him a good lesson as obviously you cannot do much about educating whatever brain matter that he does have.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

it is up to 6 months, which here in Canada he will get maybe 2 weeks, or pay a fine. We need stricter laws, for idiots like him to learn

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

I'm hoping this guy receives a hefty fine and a lengthy jail sentence, but I doubt it. Though after what happened to AK in my city. For those who don't know, earlier this month a 6 month old male GSD / Rottie mix named AK was found on a 2nd floor balcony with his ears cut off, bleeding, crying and pawing at his head. The community was so disgusted when this made front page news a few months ago when it happened, they made the owners life a living hell. He had the nerve to comment to the media that he has been under extreme stress since this incident. The following link is the story to AK's story. You'll have to scroll down, you can't miss his pic. WARNING: His picture is graphic. In the article it states who you can write to, to voice your opinion for tougher laws in Ontario when it comes to animal cruelty, such as what happened to this poor dog and AK.

Re: idiot rottie owner in toronto

Was there any follow-up to the story? What happened to AK... did the owner get jail time?
I find we often see these types of stories which horrify everyone, yet there is never any follow-up. I always like to know how things end.
That's the media for you... it's all about shocking the public and then no follow-up I find.
