Owner strangles rottweiler after vicious attack (Canada)

How bizarre is this???

Owner strangles rottweiler after vicious attack

A vicious attack by a large Rottweiler Wednesday night has left a 51-year-old Ottawa man with severe injuries to his arms and substantial blood loss.

The owner had to strangle his own dog to death to save the victim.

The attack happened just before 9 p.m. at 1195 Howie Rd. in the rural west end south of
Carp.

“The dog has ear mites and they were putting drops in the ears when he bit the 51-year-old male,” said Darryl Wilton, Ottawa Paramedic duty officer.

The ferocious bites from the seven-year-old, 125-pound dog, ripped open the victim’s left bicep and “shredded” his right arm from the elbow down, said Wilton.

The dog's owner, a 25-year-old friend of the homeowner, is well known to the man. Paramedics said the dog’s owner can be credited with saving the man’s life.

Witnesses told police the victim had been drinking and began to taunt the dog, causing the animal to react and attack him. The dog's owner rushed to the man's aid.

“The owner went up to the dog from behind and strangled the dog. He choked his own dog to death,” said Wilton.

Wilton said the victim was in critical condition when advanced life support paramedics arrived and they got him stabilized by the time they arrived at the Ottawa Hospital trauma centre. He was reported in stable condition this morning.

Police say no charges are anticipated.

In an ironic final twist to the story, the dog's owner was subsequently arrested on an outstanding, but unrelated, warrant.

Who's the victim here? geez, people are too stupid at times. drinking and then 'taunting' ( how I wonder?) then suprised when the dog reacts!!! *shakes head* I just don't understand it.

Vicious attack? I'm not sure the "victim's" life should've been saved. It sounds like he was well on his way to getting the Darwin Award he deserved.

Oh, and I'm ticked at the dog's so-called owner. Why did he sit there and let this "victim" taunt the dog?

Re: Owner strangles rottweiler after vicious attack (Canada)

You know, I'm normally the first to say that it's almost never the case that dogs attack without provocation or warning, and I certainly agree that the "victim" here is at least partly responsible for this attack (as is the owner), however, I'm sorry but I think it's really over the line for a dog to attack someone to this extent (serious mauling and needing to be strangled to death to stop the attack) over "taunting" unless there was serious pain and no way to escape. We certainly don't know just how serious the "taunting" was, but it's certainly possible that there was BOTH human instigation AND a dog with a temperament/management problem. It's one thing for a dog to snap or even bite when being taunted, it's entirely another for a dog to maul a person unrelentingly like this.
