Police shoot vicious Rottweiler, 2nd dog quarantined (Canton, NY)

Canton police shoot vicious Rottweiler, 2nd dog quarantined
Last Update: Jun 13, 2007 2:15 PM

A series of incidents involving two aggressive Rottweiler dogs led to the Canton Police Chief shooting and killing one of the animals.

The other dog is in quarantine, awaiting a judge's order on its fate.

Village Police told NewsWatch50 that the first incident was reported about midnight Tuesday.

Police received a report from a bicyclist on West Main street saying that the person had been chased by two barking and aggressive Rottweilers. Police were unable to locate the dogs.
About 5:20 a.m. police received several complaints of the dogs chasing pedestrians in the area of Lincoln and Miner Streets.
Police prevent one dog from attacking a pedestrian by pulling a squad car in front of it.
Police subdue the dogs with pepper spray; Dog Control Officer called to the scene.
Dog Control Officer finds dogs very aggressive and is unable to approach them.
Police Chief Alan Mulkin responds to the scene; shoots and kills one dog as it advances on him.
The other dog is located later Tuesday and picked up on an order from Village Justice Michael Crowe. The animal was taken to a veterinarian's office.
Police say the owner of the dogs has been identified as Shane Barr of 28 Gouverneur Street.
Village Dog Control Officer Jim Pipher said the surviving dog was located with its owner and taken into custody without incident. "When the owner's there, it's a whole lot different," Pipher said.

Pipher said that in almost 20 years of animal control, he's rarely encountered animals so vicious.

The shooting of the first animal took place in front of a day care center that was about to open for the day.

"I love dogs but I love children more," Pipher said. "I'm not against the breed but I have to protect the public."

He said village Justice Michael Crowe will decide the surviving dog's fate, with input from the police department.
