Rottweiler savages a terrier in town centre

JOYCE Worthington, in shock, describes the attack to a police officer.A ROTTWEILER savagely mauled a miniature Yorkshire terrier and tossed it into the air "like a rag doll" in front of horrified shoppers on a busy town centre street.

The 3ft, burly black beast, who was accompanied by a man, went for tiny pet, Bertie, knocking his terrified elderly owner off her feet and into a doorway.

Witnesses stopped in their tracks on Chestergate as they heard agonising screams from the small dog which was on a lead, as the Rottweiler cracked four of his ribs. Its fangs missed the terrier’s lungs by millimetres.

Bertie’s owner Joyce Worthington, 78, of Great King Street, said: "It threw my baby in the air like a rag doll.

"I’m not a cruel woman, but that dog should be put down."

Other shocked witnesses to the attack at 2pm last Thursday (March 8) said they had feared for their safety and that of their children.

Mum-of-four, Caylie Jones, 25, of Kenilworth Close, who out shopping with her seven-month-old son, Tyler, in a pushchair, said: "It could have been my baby it attacked, then it would have been more serious."

Bertie, eight, who shares Joyce’s bed and is loved by many local children, was rushed to nearby Macclesfield Veterinary Hospital on Cumberland Street who sedated him and put him on a saline drip.

Former landlady, Joyce, a mum-of-one, said that Bertie has been her best friend since her husband Tom died four years ago.

"I ache and throb and can’t help but help but cry when I see him," she said.

Thanks to the Macclesfield Express, Janet Brenton, a partner at Macclesfield Veterinary Hospital, kindly agreed to put the £350 on ice until the culprit’s owner pays for the treatment.

She said: "Bertie is lucky to be alive – a couple of millimetres the other way and it would have been a different story."

Joyce who is now reunited with Bertie after his five days in hospital, said: "My baby is back now and I want to thank everyone who has helped me."

Head of Macclesfield Neighbourhood Policing Unit (MNPU), Insp Gareth Woods, said: "We will take the most positive action and are currently interviewing witnesses and checking CCTV."

Sgt Daniel Binder, of MNPU, said: "We have details of the owner and are making inquiries as to whether the dog was under proper control."
