Young girl critical after dog attack

NEWBERRY — A 3-year-old Luce County girl was critically injured by a Rottweiler Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at a residence on County Road 457 in Luce County around 4 p.m., according to deputy Steven Kellogg of the Luce County Sheriff’s Department.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the 3-year-old child apparently left the residence and sustained injury from a dog bite and/or ligature of chain around the neck,” Kellogg said.

Kellogg added that the Rottweiler was chained up outside and had been with the family for one month.

The girl was transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital by Luce County EMS and then later was flown to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Kellogg said the child is in critical but stable condition.

The incident, which remains under investigation, was reported to police by a neighbor.

Oh No!! I have been so thankful that the Upper Peninsula has been so fortunate in not having these horrible incidents, but in recent years I have noticed so many Rotties whereas before they were very rare.

Its almost a given up here that most people do tie or let their dogs run loose.
