Rottweiler shot after attacking police dog

KELOWNA, B.C. -- In what police are calling a "bizarre set of circumstances," an RCMP dog handler has been forced to shoot a rottweiler that was attacking his police dog.

The officer and his dog were searching for a suspect shortly after midnight Saturday when a man driving a stolen car tried to elude police at a road check.

A short chase followed before the suspect bailed out of the car and fled on foot.

Cpl. Henry Proce said the dog unit arrived on the scene within minutes and began tracking the suspect.

"During the track, the police dog jumped over a fence into a yard and was attacked by a rottweiler from another yard," said Proce.

"The rottweiler was not in its own yard and the owner could be seen next door."

Proce said police were announcing their presence while searching for the suspect and yelled at the dog owner to call off his dog.

"Police kicked at the rottweiler, but it continued to attack the police dog," said Proce. "When it appeared the police dog or its handler might face serious injury, the dog handler shot the rottweiler two times."

The rottweiler survived the shooting and is expected to make a full recovery.

The police dog received a puncture wound to the leg and is also recovering.

The alleged car theft suspect is believed to have entered a nearby house and has not been captured.

I never like to read these stories. The dogs owner was right there. I am not saying he should have jumped in the middle of a dog fight, but it is disturbing that his dog was not fenced or leashed and in not being contained ended up being injured in that way. I really hope that owner knows that this whole incident with his dog could have been prevented.

It WAS contained, it was in someone elses yard. Maybe the two neighbours yard connected, and are fenced in together, YOU don't know. The police dog hopped the fence where the Rottie was (irrelevent if it was actually HIS yard or his neighbors) they were all out there.

I think this is a case of miscomunication/misunderstanding. I wouldn't doubt that the owner didn't think his dog was an interference if it was secured in his neighbours yard, him right there. THen the police dog hops the fence and viola, there's a problem.

Its a shame the car theif got away, but I'm glad to see both dogs will be fine. That Rott and its owner is VERY lucky the RCMP did not shoot to kill!! Very lucky.

Yet another case of NEVER leave your dogs unattended, even in your yard.

I am always within ear-shot of my yard. Even in the winter I have a window slightly opened so I can hear my dogs outside (no barking allowed).

If a police dog was on a scent, he was not looking to see if the coast was clear before jumping the fence .... it is too bad his handler hadn't been closer to spot the dog in the yard before he jumped the fence though.

I have no idea what my dogs would have done if a strange dog just jumped into my yard .... BUT, I would be there to be ON IT NOW.
