Rottweiler shot by trespassing hunters

Dog shot by trespassing hunters
The Associated Press

BRODHEADSVILLE -- Tory Warner said she heard a shot and a yelp, then two more shots as she ran up the dirt road from her barn.

Warner said she found her injured dog lying in the road, and saw hunters heading for their vehicles. "I went chasing after them. I was screaming at them," Warner said.

The dog, Max, a 2-yar-old Rottweiler, was shot in the head, shoulder and stomach, and was euthanized at Brodheadsville Veterinary Clinic. Warner said state police told her they would not file charges because the dog was not tied up. She said the dog was only unleashed when she was outside with him, and she now fears for the safety of her other two dogs, five cats and two horses.

"It's like they don't care that it's private property," said Warner, who said she has been "a hunter, a respectful hunter," since she was 16. "Our place is posted like crazy," she said.

Neighbor Rob Sawada said the hunters were on his property, even though it is posted and he expects people to ask permission to hunt there. "There won't be any more hunting, not even people I know," he said. A state game warden was investigating.

This is horrible. This woman should pursue this, while I know there are many law-abiding hunters out there, these types ruin it for them. And, they should be punished for such.

I wonder if they would be willing to file charges if the dog had been chained up and bit one of the trespassers?

I am a city girl now, but I can remember hunting season when I lived in Northern Maine. Family pets were dyed orange for the season and a lot of people wouldn't let their dogs out much past the back door.

It's really a shame that folks have to go to such great lengths when on their own property...

Re: Rottweiler shot by trespassing hunters

The hunters need to be charged. Hands down, end of conversation.

My heart breaks for the owner. However, I do have to say that during hunting season, Parker is NEVER away from me (i.e. I am actively spending time directly with him outside). If I'm not looking at him / working with him - he's in the house. Even if he is wandering on our own property. If I can't see him, I can't protect him.

We've had some real yahoo's up around my parents place. They're on the edge of a bird sanctuary that borders hydro fields. Lots of deer - lots of yahoo's without respect for anyone.

Re: Rottweiler shot by trespassing hunters

I would persue it... even if only a civil case. Although if signs are posted than it becomes tresspassing (which I believe is against the law in all states) Shooting of the dog also would probably qualify under destruction of property. At least it does here in MN and TX.

Hunters like this give other hunters a bad name and it's a shame that people are this.

This is so sad. I pray that she pursues this and that justice prevails. Especially that they were on private property... SOB's... I hope they get theirs. Even if this lady is able to seek justice... it still won't replace her boy. This kind of stuff just makes me absolutely sick.
