| Disgusting torture of dog. I hope I put this in the right section. This has been in the news for the past week here in Calgary, it took place in a small town outside the city. Last Sunday evening a couple discovered a dog on the side of the road, its four legs were bound together, duct tape was around its mouth and a bag was tied over its head and a rope was tied tightly around its neck. The dogs neck, back and pelvis were all broken and there were lacerations over the dogs entire body, the dog was still alive when the couple discovered it. Thank god the couple phoned not only the police but also a veterinary who came and immediately put the dog to sleep. The dog had been dragged behind a car and left for dead. The police were able to follow the blood stains from where it had been dragged three blocks back to a house. It turns out it was that familys pet, a female lab/collie cross. The 19 year old son and his 17 year old friend have been charged with injuring/endangering an animal, unnecessary suffering of an animal and obstructing a police officer. I really hope these two kids go to jail for this, but knowing the way the animal laws are here in Canada it wouldn't suprise me if they end up with just a fine and some community service. How really sick in the mind does someone have to be to do this kind of thing to any kind of living creature. That poor dog I cannot imagine the suffering that it endured. |

| Re: Disgusting torture of dog. Quote:
There are two ways to use your energy when faced with such abuse of power....you can either allow yourself to be wrapped (and trapped) in your own first reaction of horror and hate for the evil people to do this, or you can experience it, and then push it over in order to open the door to use your energy on behalf of the victims, and future victims, of such abuse. I completely agree these kids need a very swift judicial sledgehammer to come down on them, and HARD. They need to go to jail and they need to learn, since they have no sense of conscience of their own, that we as a society WILL NOT TOLERATE this abuse of one weaker than themselves and WE WILL inflict on them the discipline they choose not to exhibit on their own, and we will do it with BARS. Since you feel the judicial system will not respond appropriately, stand up and speak your mind, and speak it loud, to those who make the laws. You are not helpless as long as you have your voice. |

| Re: Disgusting torture of dog. This is not about the poor dog, it is response to moondog and how much I agree with taking action.I was always a person of deep sympathy but never one to take action, until our wonderful, sweet UPS driver was killed in a random shooting by some repeat drug offender. On Long Island , this jerk stood on the cross Island parkway and fired at red cars.Todd Upton the ups driver was returning home with his wife from dropping their oldest at college. His wife was driving so he could take a break and that was the end of his life. My first reaction was wow, I hope some one does something for the family. I hope the community raises money for them, and then I had this great bolt of reality. What if no one does anything, what if every one is saying the same thing. I was so angry and disgusted with humanity that this could happen to such a great person, I for the first time got off my you know what and got in touch with some great people. We organized a benefit, went door to door for donations and prizes to raffel off. We got food donations etc. Seems every one really wanted to do something . As moondog said, we found our voice and came together as a community to support and raise a great deal of money for his family. I did feel better by putting my rage to work. Thanks moondog,I don't think I realized how passionate I was about finding a voice until I read your response. |

| Re: Disgusting torture of dog. I only read that story because i saw that Moondog had replied. I freely admit that i avoid shelters and these horror stories because i just feel that I would suffer too much and that I would lose my ability to ever enjoy life again. I fear that the murderous anger and the sense of frustration would be harmful to me. BUT! When a situation presents itself--I DO something. It could be as minor as picking up broken bottles or chicken bones or antifreeze on the street so that other people's dogs aren't harmed. I train, feed, water, walk, and love any neglected dog I see. Certainly no one has ever gotten away with abusing a dog or woman or child when I am around. Yes, there are risks but i just don't care. Especially because I am older woman, I can educate, call 911 or if necessary just give 'em hell and get away with it. If nothing else having another person call attention to abuse may encourage victims to understand they are entitled to help. Plus i do get satisfaction from embarrassing these bullies. Without writing an entire book here, please know that I have the common sense to avoid exacerbating the situation! So Moondog, I am in complete agreement. DO SOMETHING! If we all take care of our own neighborhoods the world may be a better place.....LolaB I just saw your post! Brava!!!!! I am so happy to read that!

| Re: Disgusting torture of dog. You two have just put in real world terms exactly what I'm talking about, and thank you for that. Abuse does not just fall out of the sky, there are signs of trouble that are ignored by those in proximity (family, friends, neighbors, community), just as there are signs for the general public, not in proximity, through previous news reports like the one we are talking about here that laws are inadequate or not enforced and therefore ineffective and good for nothing. There's only one way to make sure abusers don't escalate to this level, or god forbid repeat the abuse.....and that's for the rest of us to put our concern for ourselves aside long enough to find the COURAGE to stand up and find the ways we can do something about what we can see is so very, very wrong. We (the collective we) ignore what we know to our own peril and to the peril of those around us. That is why history repeats itself....it will always come back to bite us in the butt. People of no conscience who commit these atrocities need their freedom revoked and it is the rest of us that need to make sure that happens. Last edited by moondog; 10-14-2006 at 07:10 PM. |
