| SAN DIEGO -- A dog shot in the leg by San Diego Police sits with broken bones while the involved parties try to figure out who will foot the bill. NBCSanDiego.com - Local News - Dog Shot In Leg Needs Someone To Foot Bill Veterinarians said the dog -- who is named Bylaw -- has only a few days to get the surgery it needs, and the owner is trying to figure out a way to pay for the costly surgery. The shooting happened Tuesday in the 4300 block of 44th Street in the Talmadge area of San Diego. A fight broke out, and an officer was trying to track down a shooter. The shooter escaped for a while, causing the lockdown of a nearby school. As police attempted to apprehend the man, the Rottweiler allegedly approached an officer in a threatening manner, forcing the officer to shoot. One of the dog's front legs is shattered to the joint, and he is in the care of the County of San Diego Animal Services. Spokeswoman Dawn Danielson said easing the dog's pain is all that can be done, and it will take a complicated $2,000 surgery to repair the leg. She said that needs to happen within the next few days. "With all the lead and the way the bones are, maybe the blood flow may stop to the leg," Danielson said. "And then we may be looking at amputation, which is another option for the leg. Dogs do very well with three legs. So, it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to the dog."

| Re: Rottweiler shot by police (San Diego, CA) The costs must be beared by the police depertment. forget a leg and think if someone has lost a finger, how would he feel.... Bylaw's picture is showing his suffering.... |

| Re: Rottweiler shot by police (San Diego, CA) If the San Diego Police Dept is failing to take responsibility on this one...I would recommend one major lawsuit. This dog was in his own yard when this occurred (I'm presuming this is the same dog posted earlier on a separate thread). Why is the dog in the care/custody of the shelter instead of it's owner? I'm not following the logic here...I'd simply file the suit and watch them squirm as it all unwinds on them...this rottie is clearly in pain and no one is stepping up to the plate to do anything...why?

| Re: Rottweiler shot by police (San Diego, CA) wow thats quite shocking. although i can understand that the cop did feel threatend (if the dog was being aggresive). but he could have handled the situation a lot better. aren't the police over there taught how to handle situations like this? hope the dog makes it though :( maybe they could set up a quick donation site. i dont think a $ or 2 from the people that read this article would be asking much. and im sure they'd get at least half the money they need |
