Man attacked by rottweiler (UK)

Rugby legend attacked by dog

WIGAN rugby legend Andy Gregory told today how he fought off a devil dog which savaged him at the park.

The 12-stone Rottweiler sank its fangs into the former scrum-half's side despite being on its keeper'

Andy had to punch the brute repeatedly in the face to force it to release its vice-like grip. It eventually let go, but not before its huge jaws had left a deep, football-sized bruise and several puncture wounds to the 45-year-old's flank.

The father of two has had to make three trips to hospital for treatment to the injury since the attack on the Foster's playing fields at Ince a week last Sunday although he is expected to make a full recovery.

He also wants to see the animal muzzled in future - before it kills someone.

Andy, who lives in Scholes and these days works in the construction industry, said: "I have had pain before in rugby and I will get over this one too. My main concern is that if this dog attacks someone else.

"If it went for a child or an elderly person who could not defend themselves like I did, it could kill them. I wouldn't want that on my conscience if it wasn't reported. I have always liked animals and don't want to see the creature put down but it does need to be better restrained. The attack has also made me much more cautious about big dogs than I have ever been before.

"I was taking my own two dogs - a Dalmatian and a Jack Russell - out for their regular walk across Foster's Fields at Ince on the Sunday morning when it happened. There was a guy with a Rottweiler on a lead and as we passed it went for my Jack Russell.

"The guy didn't seem to be doing much to be stopping it, but I managed to get my dogs out of the way. But as I turned the dog charged at me.

"I was taken off balance and fell to the ground with the Rottweiler's jaw sunk into my side. I had to fight the dog and punched it several times in the face to make it let go.

"I was in a semi-state of shock and did not really take in what happened then. I remember the guy saying it wasn't his dog and he was taking it out for his sister or daughter or something. I have not seen him since but some lads who were fishing nearby and came to ask if I was all right said they knew him."

Re: Man attacked by rottweiler (UK)

Another one of these stories...Thanks again, Rene.

12 stone is 168 pounds. These stories ALWAYS have some huge number given as the weight of the dog, especially in the initial story. Of course, they didn't actually stop to weigh him. But, it makes you wonder how much other "factual" information in the story gets exaggerated. And that's the stuff that sticks in people's minds all too often.

Re: Man attacked by rottweiler (UK)

What was the handler of the Rottweiler doing during this attack? Apparently he must have been standing and watching, instead of reacting. Whether it was his sister's or daughter's dog is irrelevant! HE was walking the dog and it was HIS responsibility to maintain control over an obviously out-of-control dog. This could have been fatal.

Re: Man attacked by rottweiler (UK)

Wow, 168 pounds! Never ceases to amaze me peoples complete ignorance! I would say if that Rott was 168 lbs, the guy would be DEAD, or he wouldn't have been able to waddle over there to attack him!!

It is completely irrelevent whose dog it is, you are sooooo right about that! It just doesnt matter when something like this occurs.

It funny how these stories get all mucked up and bogged down in the umimportant details like whos dog it was, how heavy the dog was, or even for that matter, WHAT kind of dog it was. The bottom line is, another person has LET their dog attack someone, it was a Rottweiler, and their is hell to pay for all Rotts now.

I can say I am so sick of it that sadly WHEN not if it happens in my area again I would like to personally ask the person responsible what they were thinking, and do they know what they are causing with their irresponsiblity?
