Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

This is only a few miles from where we live. I am trying to find more details, but it is very hush - hush around here so far. It bothers me to know that continuously dogs are paying the price for their owner's negligence, yet the counties do not enforce education for humane treatment.

This is so sad. I know police have hard jobs and make hard decisions, I just wish the dog could have been peppersprayed or something other than shot and killed.

Most police agencies now have the taser guns... This would have worked, the dog would have been alive, but it looks painful...

Still looking for more answers, I am completely outraged. This is in a city and the houses are fairly close together. Okay, you have a loose big dog... no charges were placed against the owners, so more than likely, the dog was truly placing no threat. It amazes me that the first thing the officer did was fire his weapon! I too thought that IF the dog was threatening, they could still use pepper spray. Who knows!

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

havent been here in the boards for a while, and I hope I don't get flamed too bad but...

I feel that sometimes our love for the breed can quite overcome the reality that this was a rottweiler out on the loose that charged a police officer. It was shot and killed? Yes, and I do not hold any grief for the fact that it was.

Its a known fact that although Police officer does carry pepperspray, and can defend ones self - children cannot. We see it on the boards a lot. A lot of us here at rott.net do own great rotts that would not do such a thing so we are automatically stricken by the thought of something like this happening to one of ours. But the facts still lie..

1) out loose on streets
2) charged a police officer
3) temperment of dog prior to incident was not known and probably still is not truthfully known

congrats to the officer - he may of saved some kids lives

a to say the dog was placing no threat - I would not assume this much after having concerned citizens havin to call the police for a threatening dog, then the dog charging the officer... whats not a threat?

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

I definately get what you are saying kywildcat581, but up untiol that time the officer had no knoweldger that this dog had hurt anyone, and he in fact did not. If he had simply secured him using lesser force at that time, the owers could have been charged and this incicdent could have been taken care of in that matter.

Nothing was accomplished here. And i find it even more dissapointing that city officials are keeping this hushed up.

It conveys a sense of a mistake on someones part that needs to be owned up to along with a missed oppourtuniy to educate the public on the proper responsibilities of owning a dog.

It is REALLY easy to sit here and say what the officer "should" have done, but the truth is we weren't there and have absolutely NO idea exactly what happened or what the officer was feeling at the time. He is totally within his right to take what ever means necessary to protect himself and the public.

Something to keep in mind, the media is usually only telling one side of the story and frequently get the facts wrong. I see it ALL the time

Again, I didn't think about it like that, it is always good to see one more side of the story. That's what I love about forums. It is sad all of this could have been prevented though by simply taking certain measures to contain a dog.

I totally agree with you. It is so sad that the dog is the one to pay for his owners stupidity

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

First thing I can't wait till I get a kennel. Second I blame the owners and if anything like that happened to one of my dogs I would be the one at fault, not the dog or the officer, IMO. I feel the owners should be charged and yes if it were one of my dogs I feel I should be charged. Owners need to be held responsible IMO.

I am a police officer and pepper spray does not work on dogs only on small dogs and tasers will kill dogs.

Have you not seen that video going around the internet where the police officer tasered a rottweiler that was charging him, that dog very much was alive and kicking, he took off running away after the shock...

No I didn't see the video did he get the full voltage. Probably not. Call the taser company taser they were made for humans only not for animals they will kill a animal that rott was lucky. He didn't get the full voltage. That is what the taser company told us. Are you and officer? Do you carry a taser? Did you ever feel the voltage that came out of these things? I felt half the voltage if that rott took the full voltage he would be dead trust me. These things are nasty. Do a search the taser already killed 70 people.
