Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

I'm military police, we carry M4. Look, I just saw the video, I have no idea what voltage the cop used, I just know the cop was real, and the dog was real, and that the dog was alive after he stopped shocking him.(dog took off and ran away) I know about the deaths with the tasers( although alot has been said that the victims had health issues) which is why their hesitant about issuing it to us.

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

I will probably get flamed for saying this too but I agree 100% with kywildcat581's comment #6. Police officers don't have an easy job, here is a large dog charging at a police officer. Was he charging or was the dog just excited to see a human that out of curiosity he started running up to the officer? We will never know, you can't always trust what the media reports. The fact is the officer doesn't know the history of the dog (the dog's temperment). There are certain breeds known to have a higher pain threshold that things like tasers at low voltages and pepperspray are ineffective.

A few years ago in Canada, around the Kitchener, Ontario area, there was an incident were two pitbulls were running loose through a neighbourhood, terrorizing the neighbours. The police had to be called in and had to make the decision to shoot the dogs. It took 14 to 15 bullets in each dog before the dogs would die. What if these dogs had attacked a child? One tazer at low voltage, pepperspray, not even one gun shot, would have been effective for these dogs. I realize that this is the fault of the irresponsible owner of these two dogs but the fact is the owner did not come forward to claim responsiblity. For the record I am Anti-BSL as I feel it's not the breed of dog but how it's owner trains it. Through my life time, I have come across owners of extremely well behaved rotties, pittbulls, and even a wolf-hybrid. I have also come across dog owners of extremely non-behaved minature dobbs, chihuahuas, and lhasa apsos. It is an unfortunate thing that had to happen but like kywildcat581's comment, I feel sometimes our love for the breed can quite overcome the reality.

Right, Are you going to hope a tazer takes down a dog coming at you , Nope not me. Hey I love dogs and I hope I never have to do it but where I am a cop, people train there pits to attack cops, thank god I have not run into one yet, I have a pit and a rott and I would hate to shoot one but if it's me or the pit. The pit is going to lose. And I am not going to use a tazer.

You have a drug dealer with a 90 pound pit who is hyped up ready to go at your throat to kill you what you going to use a tazer or a gun ? That is the kind of people I deal with I have not have to shoot any dogs yet but other officers have. I prefer not to. This sounds crazy but I rather shoot a person coming at me with a weapon than a dog.

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

i think mybe an officer shouldn't be dispateched alone to a call where thiers is a "dog running around" they should arrive at the seen and wait for animal control. If the dog is attacking someone shoot it!

Re: Police Shoot At-Large Rottweiler

I am a prison guard and I don't know if the tasers you use as a police officer are different than the ones used in Corrections, but the ones we just implemented the use of for the IERT do not hurt....but man do they stop you dead in your tracks!!! I don't believe that the taser would definately kill a Rott, but I wouldn also not bet that the Rott or even a human being could not experience cardiac arrest as a result of the shock. There are definate risks involved. That being said.....the taser would have been a less lethal use of force. The only problem is this......If you were the officer would you want to take the chance of letting that unknown dog in the close proximity required to properly utilize the taser??? Probably not!
