The father certainly wouldn't admit not watching a child that wasn't sleeping, and of course the dog has NEVER shown any sign of aggression before. My dogs are never left outside unattended, but I would sure as heck hope that neither of them would maul a 3-year old child if one wondered into the fenced area. I can't imagine a dog having to 'defend' itself, while being free in a yard, from a child that young. Yet another example of a dog with poor temperament, high drives, placed with owners who can't control it.
After hearing so many stories like this it's no wonder people who don't own Rottweilers and Pit Bulls are so afraid of them and want them banned.
