6-Year-Old Girl Dies In Dog Attack

ROCHELLE, Ga. -- A 6-year-old girl died Saturday night after she was attacked by a Rottweiler.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones Sydney Akin suffered bite wounds to the neck, side and back. She was pronounced dead last night after being airlifted to a Macon hospital.

Akin and her mother had gone to visit friends who have a small horse farm in Wilcox County. Rochelle Police Chief M. Keith McDuffie said the attack took place when they entered a fenced yard, said Rochelle Police Chief M. Keith McDuffie.

The owners of the dog were not at home when the attack took place.

How horrible and sad. It does make you wonder why someone would lead their small child into an area with an unsupervised dog while the owners weren't at home.

He says the dog's owners are family friends of the Akins and the girl's parents have not pressed charges.

I think it was just a TERRIBLE situation with a bad ending. I believe they said on the news that it was not unusual for this family to go visit the horses. I don't think ANY blame can be laid on the mother of this little girl.

The dog has been quarantined for 15 days while the police investigate.

I've said many prayers for this family this past weekend.

I'm sorry - I shouldn't have said it the way that I had. It was more of a concern about non-owners entering enclosures, nevermind with children.

The story I had didn't have any of the detail you did.

It's such a horrible loss.
