Rottweilers maul and kill toy poodle

JudiW often chides and advises that your dog should be locked in it's area. Locked in your yard, and locked in their pens. This story is a very good example as to why to follow that great advice. The dogs 'somehow escaped' from the fenced back yard.

These dogs are also the result of a BYB. There is a real problem with BYB rottweilers here in Winnipeg. They are destroying the breed with unsound termperments, poor health, and really poor public perception. Winnipeg's population is around 725,000 people.

In Winnipeg, on any given day, you could buy 5-6 "king rottie" or rare long haired german rotties. You usually cannot buy a rottie from a COE breeder without at least a 2 year wait.

COURT DATE FOR DOG OWNER

A Winnipeg man whose Rottweilers killed a toy poodle had a date set yesterday for his day in court.

Andy Cushnie will appear in court Feb. 9 to answer to violating the city's pound bylaw.

Doreen Stevenson's purebred toy poodle was mauled to death last month by a pair of Rottweilers belonging to Cushnie. Last month, Cushnie told The Sun the Rottweilers were locked inside their backyard pen when he left the house less than a half a hour before the attack.

"They're normally good, especially with people, but I've never had them around other dogs before. Maybe it was the heat, I don't know," Cushnie said at the time.
The minimum fine Cushnie faces for the offence is $350 for each dog.

No, it wouldn't be the heat, that would be a lack of socialisation.

and of course, they were not "locked" in their pens. Rottweilers are quite clever, but I haven't seen one yet that can pick a padlock

I wish the forums had a sarcasm smiley. I'd post it all over my "somehow escaped" statement! There is no way these dogs were properly enclosed if they could get out.
I read an earlier version of this story, and the dogs were enclosed by a back yard fence. The fence gate usually latches close, but does not have a lock.

I hope the court fines enough that this owner re-thinks his responsibilities to his animals.
