APB/Rott Mix Shot and Killed Saw this on the news today and even though they say the other dogs had minor injuries, from the looks of the Collie/Sheltie (not quite sure) it wasn't minor. The whole left side of it's neck area was shaved, had puncture wounds, and looks like it had tubes coming out in multiple places. The dog was up and walking around though. Story is the first one on this link: http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2005/06/10/news/local/doc42a9260b83d01352663944.txt A Bettendorf police officer shot and killed a 3-year-old, 50-pound pit bull-rottweiler mix Thursday evening after the dog charged at him. The incident occurred at 6:21 p.m. on the bike path at 18th Street and Parkway Drive, police said. Bettendorf police dispatch received a call about a pit bull that was loose on the bike path. When the officer arrived, he found the pit bull attacking another dog. The owner of the dog being attacked was trying to save his pet. The officer sprayed the pit bull with no effect. The pit bull eventually let the other dog go, and charged toward the officer. The officer then shot the pit bull. Police said the pit bull had attacked another dog earlier. Both canines attacked by the pit bull suffered minor injuries. The owner of the pit bull will face misdemeanor charges of dog at large and vicious dog, police said.

The poor dogs. It really is a shame that you can't even walk your dogs anymore without risking being attack by a vicious dog that owners let run loose. While I was walking my sheperd mix puppy I walked by a home the had an overly large rottweiler tied up to the house with a peice of thin rope, it look like it wasn't even half an inch thick. The dog broke its rope and charged at us. It circled around me and strattled my puppy. Fourtunatly a neighbour was around (the owners were not home) and she managed to tead the dog away with food. She then locked it in it's owners garage. I wasn't hurt, either was my pup, but I don't know what would have happend if no one was around. I don't understand why someone would keep and large dog like that, especially a rotti on a thin little rope. The rope wasn't very long either, maybe two feet long. The owners now have a pen for their dog after hearing what happend.

Does anybody feel slightly disturbed when they see a dog tied up? In my opinion, this only serves to aggravate the animal. A far better solution is to keep the dog in a secure yard with a "beware of dog" sign. I am a rott owner and he is the biggest baby in the world, but if I'm not at home, I want to have the peace of mind that he is not going to harass anybody.

Quote: A far better solution is to keep the dog in a secure yard with a "beware of dog" sign I do agree with the "Beware Of Dog" sign, but this sign lets others know that the dog MAY attack/bite! A friend of mine told me to put a "No Trespassing" (her friend is a cop who told her to take down the "Beware Of Dog" signs and put the "No Trespassing" ones up! This lets others know that there is something on the other side of the fence instead of letting them know that there is a dog and are more likely to cross!! Many cases I have read about dog bites on peoples property have the "Beware Of Dog" signs, this could cause a law suit and MAYBE who ever had a dog bite could sue, so I am going to hang up "No Trespassing, Guard Dog On Duty" these signs let others know that there is a Dog on the other side instead of letting them know that there might be a vicious dog!!

I personally detest seeing any dog left tied up for extended amounts of time. I realize there may be occasions where a dog has to be tied up for a short time but to leave an animal tied up on a regular basis for hours on end turns them into aggressive dogs. Not to mention leaving a dog with a rope attached to its collar while your not home is dangerous...what happens if the dog gets tangled up in the rope or the rope becomes caught up on something? I agree...a secure yard or keeping your dog inside when your gone out is so much more safer for everyone involved!

I hate seeing a dog tied up. I believe it just makes them aggressive but even if it doesn't it is dangerous to feed, water, or try to love them because they are so excited they can tangle you in the chain. This could cause you to fall, etc. We had a dog that we could not keep in the yard. He constantly dug out. My husband lined the bottom of the fence with crossties secured with stakes and he dug up the stakes, moved the crosstie and still dug out. (We are not talking about a little pen, it was almost a half an acre.) He was a half Beagle half Bassett Hound. He was a great dog, loved children, loved to play. When we had to chain him up to keep him in because of the leach law I found him a home in the country with a little boy to keep him company. It broke my heart to have to chain him up. We never had any problem with the other dog that was in the yard, he was happy there playing with the children and chasing squirrels.
