Neil Pera was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. Sunday after police responded to a call to his home from Pera’s wife, Laura, police Lt. Marc Mikulski said.

Police said they did not yet know why the dog attacked Pera. Also under investigation is whether the bites played a part in his death.

Laura Pera told officers who came to the couple’s house at 109 Cheshire Road that her husband was lying unconscious in a bedroom and that their two dogs were roaming through the other rooms unrestrained, Mikulski said.

Pera told the officers that one of the dogs, a Rottweiler, had bitten her husband several times earlier in the evening, but that he had not sought medical attention, Mikulski said. Officers observed several bite marks on Neil Pera’s torso, Mikulski said.

Pera’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Farmington. A spokeswoman said the cause of death is still being investigated.

The Rottweiler was initially confined to a bedroom in the home so that police could begin the investigation. An officer from the state Department of Environmental Protection was later able to help police tranquilize the dog so that it could be removed from the home, Mikulski said.

The Rottweiler is being held at the Wallingford Animal Shelter pending the outcome of the investigation. Animal control officials could not be reached for comment late Monday.

Neighbors of the Peras said they hadn’t had problems with the Rottweiler, but that the couple rarely let the dog out or took it for walks. The neighborhood is one of modest homes near The Farms Country Club.

I am not defending the dog - but is there any information on the breed of the "other" dog?

It is the wife's word that it was the Rottweiler that bit her husband. (He - being dead - was unavailable to back up her story)

Or am I the only person who read it this way?

your right she probably mislead the police to believe it was the rottweiler so she could keep the dog around that bit her husband several times and had a part in his death anythings possible

I don't know, but I do know that many people are in denial about their own dogs. I have known people that have been pretty bitten up by their own dogs and excuse the behavior. I don't think I would excuse the behavior, but the man might.
He could be mentally deficient (54 years old is a little young, but not unheard of for Alz. or he could be Schizoid<sp?>). He could have had a seizure and the dog attacked him because of that (not unheard of). Just throwing something out there that might explain why the guy didn't go and get medical attention.
Now if you go on the evil wife story, she could have locked him in the bedroom, preventing him from getting medical attention.
Need more information or this is just a fun exercise on speculation.

Anyway you look at it.....it is one more fatal dog bite/attack that adds to the death toll.
